Original Medicare: Cost And Coverage

Humana and Iora Primary Care talk about navigating Medicare choices

Now lets return to Original Medicare. It definitely costs more upfront, as its imperative to add a Medigap policy to cover the coinsurance costs that are embedded in all Medicare. Again, a premium for a Medigap Plan G might run $100 to $300 a month, depending on where you live. But for that premium you have no other out-of-pocket costs other than the standard deductible for Medicare Part B .

If you live in a high-cost area, that works out to $3,600 a year per person. Clearly that is a significant cost that you want to plan for. But then you dont have to worry.

Do Medicare Advantage Plans Have Deductibles

Most Medicare Advantage Plans also known as MA or Medicare Part C do have deductibles associated with inpatient services, but the amount is not universal.

Instead, Medicare Advantage Plans, which are administered by private insurance companies, have a secondary cost protection measure for users. This is called the maximum out-of-pocket amount. For 2022, the MooP for Medicare Advantage Plans is $7,550 for in-network services.

MooP costs accrue when you pay copays, coinsurance, and deductibles outlined in the plan benefits. Once the MooP is met, the Medicare Advantage Plan covers all additional costs for the rest of the calendar year.

Medicare Advantage Plans can, and often do, change from year to year. Reviewing your Medicare Advantage Plan during the annual open enrollment period is a good way to avoid surprises associated with your plan.

Our Thoughts: Why We Recommend Humana Supplement Plans

Humana’s Medicare Supplement plans can help you reduce your portion of health care costs beyond what’s provided by Original Medicare. Humana’s Medigap plans are moderately priced, and there is a good selection of plan options.

Plus, Humana’s Medicare Supplement plans have add-on benefits including discounts on vision, hearing and Lifeline medical alert, which can be a key resource for aging at home. Plans also include the popular SilverSneakers fitness program.

    Humana at a glance

Humana Medigap doesn’t include any dental benefits. However, you can choose to enroll in a Humana dental insurance policy that has a large network of dentists and no waiting periods for most dental services.

Humana does have a higher rate of complaints than is typical for an insurer of its size. This is an important factor to consider because customer service is a key way to differentiate between providers offering standardized Medigap policies. However, Humana’s wide availability, useful add-on benefits and reasonable rates mean that Humana Medicare Supplement plans are still a good choice for many people.

What Does Primary And Secondary Payer Mean

Each type of coverage you have is called a payer. When you have more than one payer, there are rules to decide who pays first, called the coordination of benefits. The primary payer pays what it owes on your bills first and sends the remaining amount to the second or secondary payer. There may also be a third payer in some cases.1

      Important facts to know include:

      • The primary payer pays up to the limits of its coverage.
      • The secondary payer only pays if there are costs the first payer didnt cover.
      • The secondary payer might not pay all of the uncovered cost.
      • If Medicare is the primary payer and your employer is the secondary payer, youll need to join Medicare Part B before your employer insurance will pay for Part B services.

      Medicare Advantage Plans Part 2

A Medicare Advantage Plan is a type of Medicare health plan offered by a private insurance company that contracts with Medicare to provide you with all your Part A and Part B benefits. If youre enrolled in a Medicare Advantage Plan, most Medicare services are covered through the plan and arent paid for under Original Medicare. Most Medicare Advantage Plans offer prescription drug coverage. There are six things you will want to consider if looking at a Medicare Advantage Plan. They include the premium, copays, coinsurance, deductibles, providers that take the plan and the drug formulary of the plan. This week we will look at the premium, copays and coinsurance.

The premium of MA plans can vary depending on the type of plan you have and the company offering the plan. Although the premium of the plan should be a part of your decision it shouldnt be the only consideration. For some, the MA plan with the lowest premium may fit your needs perfectly but for others it could actually cost you more in the long run if the other five considerations dont match up for you. Also, if you are currently in a MA plan and it is working for you, switching plans solely because of the premium may not be in your best interest.
