How Do I Get Social Security

Money Monday: How to sign up for Medicare

Social Security gives monthly payments to retirees, disabled persons, and families of retired, disabled, or deceased workers, according to the National Academy of Social Insurance. The Social Security Administration states that almost all of American workers are covered under Social Security. Your age at retirement and your lifetime earnings affect your Social Security benefit amount. Higher earnings will result in higher Social Security benefits. The earliest you can start receiving Social Security retirement benefits is age 62, but you may receive more if you wait longer to retire.

If you are younger than 62 and have a disability, you may qualify for Social Security disability or Supplement Security Income after supplying information about your medical condition and work and education history. You can find the Social Security adult disability report here. Types of disabilities that may qualify you for Social Security benefits include:

  • Musculoskeletal system disorders
  • Congenital disorders that affect multiple body systems
  • Neurological disorders
  • Mental disorders

While families of retired and disabled workers are eligible for Social Security, families are generally not eligible for Medicare.

Reasons To Delay Medicare Part A

One key reason to delay Medicare Part A is because you may want to keep contributing to a health savings account which allows you to save money tax-free. Once you enroll in any part of Medicare even if its only premium-free Part A you can no longer put money into an HSA.

You can still use the funds to pay for qualified health care costs though.

Check with your plan benefits administrator about your options. If you do decide to delay, youll want to first make sure youll qualify for a Medicare Special Enrollment Period when your employer insurance ends. If you dont, you may have to pay late enrollment penalties.

Another reason you might want to delay Part A is you cant get it premium-free. People who have to pay a premium for Part A may consider delaying enrollment to avoid the expense. Part A charges a penalty for late enrollment, though. An alternative in this case is to get a Marketplace plan instead of Medicare.

Can I Sign Up For Medicare Plans Online

Enrolling in Medicare coverage options online is generally easy and quick. More and more people are signing up online, according to an eHealth study. During 2018, about 16% of people in the study enrolled in Medicare coverage options online. Thats up from only 10% in 2017. In other words, about 60% more people in the study used eHealths online enrollment tool to sign up in 2018 than in 2017.

Its interesting to note that online enrollment was even higher during Q4. Q4 means the 4th quarter of the year, October through December. Thats when Medicares Fall Open Enrollment happens for Medicare Advantage and Medicare prescription drug plans. Fall Open Enrollment goes from October 15 December 7 every year.

    Primary And Secondary Payers

Medicare: Everything you need to know about signing up | Walgreens

Your Medicare and private insurance benefits are coordinated, which means they work together. Typically, a primary payer will pay insurance claims first and a secondary payer will only kick in for costs not covered by the primary payer. The secondary payer may not pay all of the remaining uncovered costs, and you may be responsible for any additional balance.

In many instances, if you are age 65 and covered by either a retiree plan or a plan with fewer than 20 employees, then Medicare is your primary payer and private insurance is your secondary. If this is your situation, you should enroll in Part A and B, along with D if your private insurance plan doesnt have creditable prescription drug coverage.

If youre covered by a plan with 20 or more employees, Medicare is often the secondary payer. Medicare may pay costs that your employers plan doesnt.
