What Kind Of Dental Care Does Medicare Advantage Cover And What Does It Cost

Most Medicare Part C plans cover basic dental care, such as exams, cleaning and fillings and more extensive procedures, such as root canals, tooth extractions, crowns and dentures. Because these plans are sold through private insurance companies, the types of coverage can vary. Seniors should research what each available plan covers before deciding on one. Applicants may also wish to have a dental exam and ask for advice when choosing a plan the dentist may see a need for additional service coverage down the line, so having a plan that will cover future services is important.

What To Do If A Plan Doesnt Cover Dental Services

If a Medicare Advantage plan doesnt cover dental work, the beneficiary will have to pay all of the costs for their dental visit, unless they have subscribed to an additional plan that their provider offers to fill the gaps of Medicare Advantage. Those whose dental work isnt covered may want to search for another Medicare provider or call their current provider to inquire about alternate plans.

Not all Medicare Advantage plans cover dental services, but many do. Before scheduling a trip to the dentists office, its a good idea to review dental plan coverage.

When Do Bcbs Medicare Plans Pay For Dental Implants

Dental implants that are considered a cosmetic or elective procedure may not covered by all insurance plans. Some plans may offer an annual allowance beneficiaries can use to help pay for certain dental care services or items. Depending on the plan you have, an annual allowance for dental care might be able to be used to help pay for dental implants.

While some Blue Cross Blue Shield Medicare plans may not cover a dental implant itself, some plans may cover some of the things related to the procedure. For example, the process of getting implants will require an dental exam and some X-rays, both of which may be covered by a Blue Cross Blue Shield Medicare Advantage plan that includes dental coverage.

Preparation for oral surgery may require a tooth extraction to clear way for the implants, and tooth extractions may generally be covered by some plans. You will likely be put under anesthesia during the procedure, which may also be covered. A Blue Cross Blue Shield Medicare Advantage plan that includes dental coverage may also pay for the crown or bridge that is used on top of the dental implant.

So while the implant itself may not always be covered, you may be able to receive coverage for other important dental care services.

How We Chose The Best Dental Insurance For Seniors On Medicare

When we reviewed the best Medicare Advantage Plans for dental coverage, we first considered the geographic service range. We looked at plans that serve at least 40 states or offered dental coverage in as many states as it offered medical coverage. Next, we compared premiums and copays, ease of website usability, coverage and care details, and more, all to provide the most people possible with the best dental providers for seniors on Medicare. We favored companies that included comprehensive dental and preventive care, as well as things like major services including implants and bridges. Our attention to cost detail allowed us to compare on both a monthly premium level and an overall cost based on deductibles to help you make the best choice for your budget.

Most Comprehensive Coverage: Aarp

AARPs Medicare Advantage plans, for the most part, all come with preventative dental coverage, and many of those plans also come with comprehensive dental care coverage as well.

  • Preventative dental care comes with most plans, to cover cleanings, x-rays, etc.

  • Many plans also come with comprehensive dental care

  • Generally low premiums

  • Some plans have a $500 maximum yearly limit for comprehensive dental care

  • Some plans give yearly maximum coverage amount for preventative and comprehensive dental combined

Its nice to feel secure with your insurance. Thats what AARP providesno matter what plan you choose, your pearly whites are covered. Most plans come with at least preventative dental care covered, and most also include comprehensive care covered, though at a yearly maximum cap. That means you may not need to pay anything at the dentist, depending on the procedure youre having done. However, if you think youll be having more intensive work done that would exceed the annual maximum, it may be best to look into plans that have more detailed, broader coverage options available. The PPO Plan A offers the most comprehensive coverage with a $40 deductible and $1,500 in annual coverage. The PPO Plan B offers a lower monthly premium but a $90 deductible and $1,000 in annual coverage.

Why Dental Care Is Important

Regular visits to the dentist are critical to your oral health. Routine visits help keep your teeth and gums healthy, and good oral health affects your overall health. Oral health issues, such as cavities and gum disease, can lead to more serious health issues, such as diabetes, respiratory problems and many others.

Oral health is important in all stages of life. Children, adults and seniors require proper dental care and should visit the dentist regularly. While it is recommended that we visit the dentist twice per year, many Canadians do not go as frequently as they should, often because they do not have adequate dental insurance.

Dentists Accepting Medicare Parts A B Or C

Finding a local dentist that accepts Medicare could be agonizingly tricky or as simple as 1-2-3 depending on the type of supplemental policy you have if any.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services states that Parts A and B rarely cover dental work except under narrowly defined circumstances when delivered by specific types of providers.

Therefore, seniors with traditional supplemental plans that fill the holes in Parts A and B will have limited choices and might need to identity alternatives.

However, seniors with Advantage plans will have more options and a particular place to look because these designs often include limited dental benefits.

How Does Medicare Advantage Dental Coverage Work

Medicare Advantage plans are the primary method for dental coverage under Medicare.

Whats usually covered:

  • Tooth extractions
  • Implants

Medicare Advantage are bundled plans that combine add-on benefits such as dental or vision with Original Medicare and additional cost-sharing for medical needs. About 94% of Medicare Advantage plans offer the option for dental coverage. However, sometimes there is an additional fee to include dental coverage in your plan.

For example, the standard Medicare Advantage plan from Kaiser Permanente does’t include dental care, but if you upgrade to the Medicare Advantage Plus plan, you’ll get dental, vision and hearing coverage.

The level of dental coverage with Medicare Advantage plans varies. Some have an annual payout limit, such as only contributing $1,500 to your dental care each year. Other plans could have coverage specifications on the number of cleanings per year or denture coverage.

What To Do If A Plan Covers Dental Services

If a provider covers dental services as part of their plan, seniors dont have to take any additional steps besides visiting a dental office or dentist within their network. Some Medicare Advantage plans dont cover out-of-network physicians at all, while others may cover a smaller portion of the charges. Seniors can still visit one of these offices if necessary, but they will likely pay more for their visit.

A co-pay is usually charged for the visit, and Medicare covers the rest of the fees, and payment is either made before the visit or once a bill is received in the mail. What an individual pays is dependent on the terms of their plan.

Because there is no standard billing of dental services in Alberta, dental providers can and often will charge more than what your plan pays.

If your plan states that you have 100 per cent dental coverage, your plan will pay 100 per cent of the Dental Schedule or Usual and Customary rates, but not necessarily 100 per cent of what the dentist charges. You will be required to pay the difference if there is one.

What Kinds Of Dentures Are Covered By Medicare Advantage

There are two types of dentures. Removable dentures are available in either a complete set of teeth or partial dentures, which cover gaps in the mouth. Implant dentures are surgically implanted in the jaw, with a titanium root and a cap that screws on top.

Medicare Advantage plans may cover both kinds of dentures or only one. Most applicants are advised to talk to a dentist who can determine which type of dentures are best for the individual and offer guidance toward the right plan.
