City Of Hope Study Finds Medicare Advantage May Put Complex Cancer Surgery Patients At A Disadvantage
With open enrollment for Medicare coverage ending on Dec. 7, researchers say its important for patients with cancer to understand how federal health plans cover care and treatment.
LOS ANGELES An analysis by researchers at City of Hope, one of the largest cancer research and treatment organizations in the United States, found that cancer patients with privatized, cost-saving Medicare Advantage were more likely than those with traditional Medicare to go to hospitals with physicians less experienced at performing complicated surgeries, and that they were more likely to die within the first 30 days after the removal of their stomach, pancreas or liver. The study Medicare Advantage: A Disadvantage for Complex Cancer Surgery Patients was recently published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.
The finding is important because nearly half of all Medicare beneficiaries an estimated 29 million Americans are enrolled in Medicare Advantage plans. And of the 6.6 million Medicare-eligible Californians, nearly half are enrolled in Medicare Advantage plans.
With traditional Medicare, beneficiaries typically may go to any doctor or hospital in the U.S. that takes Medicare, whereas in most cases, Medicare Advantage beneficiaries can see only doctors and providers who are in the plans network and service area.
The study data can inform policymakers and insurers who want to extend the lifespan of cancer patients, Raoof said.

Determining Your Total Cost
Below is a link to the pricing and estimate tools for services provided by City of Hope. This data contains the services provided by City of Hope as of Jan. 1, 2021. These costs are uniform for all patients served by the hospital. City of Hopes drug pricing reflects the individualized doses that take into consideration a patients age, height, weight, current clinical condition, co-morbidities, symptom management, and response to therapy. Medication pricing may vary based on these factors.
These costs rarely reflect the expected out-of-pocket expense for a specific hospital service. Your own out-of-pocket expenses will depend on one or more of the following:
- The actual patient care services that you receive, treatment decisions, unforeseen complications, additional tests, or other services ordered by your physician, and the individual needs of each patient.
- The terms of your insurance coverage, which may include deductibles, co-insurance, co-payments, policy exclusions, maximum benefits, pending financial assistance or pending state/federal program or other aid.
- The actual cost of third-party supplies, items, or services that you receive.
- Your eligibility for financial assistance.

City Of Hope is looking to expand its research, innovation and specialized cancer care to more patients nationally now that its $390 million purchase of Cancer Treatment Centers of America acquisition has closed, the health systems chief executive says.
The deal, which closed Wednesday, combines two big providers of cancer treatment that will now bring City of Hopes expertise as a National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center in southern California to Cancer Treatment Centers markets across the country. CTCA has hospitals in the Chicago, Phoenix and Atlanta markets, but draws patients to these inpatient facilities and its outpatient centers from across the country.
Given Cancer Treatment Centers brand and markets, City of Hope said it sees an opportunity to now reach more patients and create a new model for how cancer care is delivered.
The broader reach of the larger City of Hope organization will also help with research from a bigger pool of patients and their treatment challenges, executives said.
