- The aging process.
The National Institutes of Health states that age-related hearing loss tends to affect both ears equally and gradually worsens over time. In fact, some seniors may not even realize they are losing their ability to hear well.
A study reported in the U.S. National Library of Medicine showed a correlation between hearing loss and dementia, suggesting that older adults who experience hearing problems may be at increased risk for developing dementia.
There is no known way to prevent age-related hearing loss, however, the NIH suggests that you should limit your exposure to potentially damaging noises such as lawn mowers, leaf blowers, loud music, firearms, and snowmobiles, for example. Doctors do not recommend most of the following remedies, as they may result in more damage to the ear.

- Wait and see if the earwax blockage clears up by itself.

- Clear the earwax by using a syringe to direct warm water into the ear canal. However, this process could damage a persons ear, so doctors do not recommend it.
- Remove earwax at home using a cotton swab. However, this method might push the wax farther back into the ear and increase the risk of impaction. Doctors do not recommend it.

How Does Medicare Cover Cerumen Removal
Cerumen removal is included in the value for every audiometric and vestibular function test. Removing wax that is not impacted does not warrant the reporting of CPT code 69210. Removal of non-impacted cerumen is captured in the office visit, or an evaluation & management code. Just as with cerumen removal, the office visit is a non-covered Medicare service when performed by an audiologist.
Removal of impacted cerumen is reported with CPT code 69210. Chart documentation should include the time, effort, and equipment necessary to provide the service. Because cerumen removal is considered a surgical procedure, it is a non-covered Medicare procedure when performed by an audiologist.
Note: A major determining factor in the reporting of CPT code 69210 is understanding what is considered impacted cerumen. The AAO-HNS defines it as follows:
If any one or more of the following are present, cerumen should be considered impacted clinically.
- Visual considerations: Cerumen impairs exam of clinically significant portion of the external auditory canal, tympanic membrane, or middle ear condition.
- Qualitative considerations: Extremely hard, dry, irritative cerumen causing symptoms such as pain, itching, hearing loss, etc.
- Inflammatory considerations: Associated with foul odor, infection, or dermatitis.
- Qualitative considerations: Obstructive, copious amounts that cannot be removed without magnification and multiple instrumentations requiring physician skills.
Will Medigap Cover Ear Cleaning
Medigap is a supplement insurance plan that private companies offer. It is available to people enrolled in original Medicare .
The plans are standardized by Medicare, and they help fill gaps in original Medicare coverage. These gaps often include coinsurance and deductibles.
As of January 1, 2020, people who are new to Medicare cannot purchase a Medigap policy that pays for the Part B deductible.
Generally, Medigap policies do not cover vision, dental, or hearing care, so they may not cover ear cleaning.
