What Are The Side Effects Of Prrt

The most common side effects of PRRT are nausea, vomiting, belly pain, and temporary hair loss. Nausea is mainly caused by the amino acid infusion. You will be given anti-nausea medicine to lessen this side effect. PRRT can cause low blood counts, which tend to occur after a month or more of treatment. In rare cases, the treatment can damage the kidneys or liver. Your care team will watch for these problems.

How Does Medicare Cover Inpatient Substance Use Treatment

If inpatient SUD treatment is deemed reasonable and medically necessary, Medicare covers it just as they would any other hospitalization.

The beneficiary will be responsible for paying their Part A deductible , and can get up to 60 days of inpatient treatment. If inpatient treatment is still considered medically necessary after that, Medicare will cover up to 30 additional days with the beneficiary paying $389 per day in 2022. After 90 days, the beneficiary would start using up their lifetime reserve days if they remained in inpatient care.

Medicare does not have a limit on the number of times a beneficiary can receive inpatient care in a general hospital. But if care is provided in a psychiatric hospital, there is a lifetime cap of 190 days that can be covered by Medicare.

Does Medicare Cover Hifu Treatment

High-intensity focused ultrasound, or HIFU treatment, is commonly prescribed as an alternative treatment for prostate cancer. This treatment uses highly focused ultrasound to locate and destroy cancer cells. Many doctors prefer this as an initial treatment because it’s non-invasive and it doesn’t harm healthy tissue or have severe adverse side effects like radiation and chemotherapy often do.

Most Medicare plans do cover a portion of HIFU treatment. As an outpatient procedure, it falls under Medicare Part B. If hospitalization is required during treatment, that portion of the costs would typically be covered under Medicare Part A.

Improved Survival Largely Safe For Patients

The VISION trial enrolled 831 people with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer. All of them had previously been treated with chemotherapy and other standard treatments, such as enzalutamide and abiraterone . In addition, all participants had PSMA-positive tumorsthat is, their tumors overproduced PSMAas determined by PSMA PET imaging.

Trial participants were randomly assigned to receive treatment with 177Lu-PSMA-617 along with their physicians choice of treatment, which had to be among several commonly used options for cancers no longer responding to other established treatments, or their physicians treatment choice alone.

Physicians’ choices of treatment could not include chemotherapy or radium-223 , a radiopharmaceutical specifically used to treat bone metastases in patients with prostate cancer. The typical options included enzalutamide or abiraterone as well as palliative treatments, like radiation and steroids, Dr. Morris explained in an interview. Under the trials design, doctors could adapt treatment as they felt necessary.
