Medicare Supplement Foreign Travel Coverage

How Medicare-For-All Works In Australia

If you plan on traveling out of the United States, a Medicare Supplement will pick up most of the costs associated with medical emergencies.

The following Medicare Supplement plans help pay for foreign travel coverage:

  • Plan C
  • Plan M
  • Plan N

However, we highly recommend looking at Plan F, G, and N when youâre looking for a supplement plan since these three plans has the most comprehensive coverage in all areas.

How much do Medicare Supplements pay towards foreign medical emergencies?

The Medigap plans that include foreign travel coverage will pay 80% of medically necessary emergency care services. That means youâre responsible for the other 20%.

There is a lifetime maximum benefit of $50,000, which means if you end up with medical bills over $50,000, you will be responsible for all bills over that amount.

Finally, you are responsible for the first $250. After that, the planâs foreign travel coverage will kick in.

If you are a Medicare beneficiary with Original Medicare, Part A and Part B, you can travel anywhere in the United States and still be covered, as long as you use doctors and hospitals that accept Medicare. If you travel outside of the United States, however, your Medicare coverage is limited.

Please note that when it comes to Medicare coverage, outside of the United States includes any location outside of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, Virgin Islands, and the Northern Mariana Islands.

There are a few situations when Medicare may cover you outside of the country if you need medical care in a foreign hospital:

In the above limited situations, Medicare may pay for inpatient hospital care, doctor services, and/or ambulance services. Please note that if youre enrolled in Medicare plan that includes prescription drug coverage , these plans dont cover prescription medications that you purchase outside of the United States.

Basic Medicare Facts For Americans Abroad

They have direct access to the Social Security files, and have experience with problems specific to people residing outside the US. You can find the Federal Benefits Unit serving your location here: ssa.gov/foreign/foreign.htm .

The single most basic fact to remember is that you are NOT covered by Medicare while living abroad . That said, you may still need to consider enrolling in one or more parts of Medicare.

Does Medicare Cover You While On A Cruise

Medicare Advantage Plans Or Part C Covers Cost

One of the concerns for travelers enrolled in Medicare is coverage while abroad. Unlike some private medical insurance plans, Original Medicare coverage is confined within the United States borders. Though Medicare Advantage plans offer Medicare benefits beyond the traditional program, care while traveling out of the country is not typically part of the offering.

There are a few exceptions to the U.S boundary rule. Medicare recipients on a cruise may be covered for medically necessary services if the physician is permitted under specific laws to provide medical services on the ship. When the healthcare service is provided, the ship must be either docked in a U.S. port or no greater than six hours away from a U.S. port. This stands whether or not the care is of an emergency nature.

Medigap Policies May Cover TravelPeople whose lifestyle includes travel may gravitate toward Medicare Supplement, or Medigap, policies. Medigap, the term for supplemental plans that enhance Original Medicare coverage, addresses the need for foreign travel care in six of the ten current supplement plans. Effective January 1, 2020, this will be pared down to four of eight plans. At that point, Plans C and F will phase out. The remaining plans that cover travel will be D, G, M and N. Medicare recipients already enrolled in Plans C and F will be able to retain these plans.

Traveling With Medicare Advantage Or Part D

When it comes to Medicare Advantage or Part D plans, traveling can get tricky. Unlike Original Medicare, Medicare Advantage and Part D plans can be limited by the plans service area, and if you leave it, your plan may not cover you. Some Medicare Advantage plans may offer travel coverage , but the costs could vary depending on the plans rules about in-network versus out-of-network providers.

For Medicare Advantage and Part D plans, youll want to contact your plan provider to understand your options while traveling nationally or internationally.

Can I Use My Medicare In Another Country

Under certain situations, Medicare will cover foreign travel emergency care.

These situations include:

  • If youre traveling on a cruise ship, youll have medical coverage as long as the ship is still in U.S. waters. This means the cruise ship must either be at a U.S. port, or within six hours from one.
  • If youre traveling between Alaska and another state, and the closest hospital is in Canada, then Medicare will cover emergency services while in Canada.
  • If your residence is closer to a hospital outside U.S. territory, Medicare may cover non-emergency inpatient care at the closest hospital near your home.

Medicare Part D, or Medicare prescription drug coverage, also may have restrictions for use internationally.

Because Part D plans under Medicare are written through private insurance companies, you need to check with the carrier you have coverage with. This is something you should consider when buying a Medicare Part D plan. If you plan on foreign travel, make sure to talk with one of our agents prior to purchasing a plan.

Our agents can provide options with companies that have limited restrictions on using the plan internationally. If you dont know what your current plan offers, and this is a concern, we can help you investigate the details of the policy.

These travel restrictions for Part D under Medicare can even apply when traveling within the United States. Make sure to check with your plan and how coverage applies when in other states. You wouldnt want to be on vacation and then realize you cant get the prescriptions you need because of coverage issues.

There are options for Medicare Part D with many insurance carriers:

  • Vacation Override
  • You can ask many Part D plans for a vacation override or a vacation medication supply. The plan will give you an early refill prior to your vacation.

  • 90 day Prescriptions
  • You can talk with your doctor about your travel plans and may be able to receive an extended 90-day prescription for your medication.

Who Is Eligible For Health Care In Canada

Our national health insurance program is designed to ensure that all insured persons have access to medically necessary hospital and physician services on a prepaid basis. The Canada Health Act defines insured persons as residents of a province. The Act further defines a resident as:

“a person lawfully entitled to be or to remain in Canada who makes his home and is ordinarily present in the province, but does not include a tourist, a transient or a visitor to the province.”

Therefore, residence in a province or territory is the basic requirement for provincial/territorial health insurance coverage. Each province and territory is responsible for determining its own minimum residence requirements with regard to an individual’s eligibility for benefits under its health insurance plan. The Canada Health Act gives no guidance on such residence requirements beyond limiting waiting periods to establish eligibility for and entitlement to insured health services to three months. Most provinces and territories also require residents to be physically present 183 days annually, and provide evidence of their intent to return to the province.

Does Medicare Cover You In A Foreign County

Original Medicare does not cover you in a foreign country. Keep in mind that the following are considered part of the U.S:

    • All 50 states
    • The Northern Mariana Islands
    • American Samoa

There are only a few exceptions where Medicare will help pay for foreign travel coverage, and theyâre very rare circumstances. They include:

    • You’re in the U.S. when a medical emergency occurs, and the foreign hospital is closer than the nearest U.S. hospital that can treat your medical condition.
    • You’re traveling through Canada without unreasonable delay by the most direct route between Alaska and another state when a medical emergency occurs, and the Canadian hospital is closer than the nearest U.S. hospital that can treat the emergency.
    • You live in the U.S. and the foreign hospital is closer to your home than the nearest U.S. hospital that can treat your medical condition, regardless of whether an emergency exists.
    • In some cases, Medicare may cover medically necessary health care services you get on board a ship within the territorial waters adjoining the land areas of the U.S. Medicare won’t pay for health care services you get when a ship is more than 6 hours away from a U.S. port.

So, in most cases, if your only health insurance is Original Medicare, you would be responsible for 100% of medical bills you receive while traveling internationally.
