Medicare Advantage Vs Medicare Supplement Insurance

Medicare Advantage Medicare Supplement Insurance
  • You have a Medicare Advantage plan in place of Original Medicare.
  • Medicare Advantage includes all of the benefits of Part A and Part B, plus expands your coverage by offering added benefits like dental, vision and prescription drug coverage.
  • You may limit your out-of-pocket costs with maximum out-of-pocket protection.
  • You have a Medicare Supplement insurance policy alongside your Original Medicare coverage.
  • While Medicare Supplement insurance doesnt offer added benefits, it does reduce your out-of-pocket costs for the care you receive.
  • This can include out-of-pocket costs like deductibles, copays and coinsurance.
There are Medicare Advantage plans with a $0 monthly premium. However, you may have to pay an extra premium for this plan depending on your provider. Youll pay an extra premium for a Medicare Supplement insurance policy. The amount you pay depends on the policy and your Medicare provider.

*With both plans, youll still be required to pay your Part B premium.

Medicare Advantage Vs Medicare Supplement Insurance Policies Which Is Right For You

When you turn 65, you are eligible to receive Medicare coverage. Original Medicare, which includes Part A and Part B, is where many people start. But this coverage, provided by the federal government, could leave you with out-of-pocket expenses. Thats because Medicare Parts A and B were designed to generally cover only 80 percent of your medical costs.

But you can get additional health benefits outside of the coverage Original Medicare offers. Other types of plans, like Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement insurance, can provide you with more benefits or coverage than Parts A and B offer. Both Medicare Advantage and supplemental-type policies are provided by private insurance companies that are approved by Medicare. And they can help reduce your out-of-pocket costs when you receive care.

So, whats the difference between a Medicare Advantage plan and a Medicare Supplement insurance plan? Weve laid it out in this helpful chart below:

Mutual Of Omaha Medicare Supplement Plan Rate Increases

Annual rate increases are not consistent and should not be the only factor when choosing coverage. Inflation rates, location, and other factors also play a role in rate increases.

Additionally, as the cost of healthcare rises, insurance premiums will go up as well. However, this company is committed to keeping its Medicare Supplement plan rates as low as possible.

Prescription Dental And Vision Benefits

In addition to medical coverage, Mutual of Omaha Medicare Advantage offers many additional benefits related to your other health needs. For example, prescription drug coverage comes standard with all Advantage plans from Mutual of Omaha, with varying levels of coverage that include name-brand prescriptions and generic formulas alike.

Prescription plans come in all sizes and offer a wide range of coverage. When you choose to add coverage through an Advantage plan rather than traditional Part D coverage, you may find lower premiums or enjoy having all of your policies combined into one. This allows you to make a single monthly premium payment for all of your medical coverage and any additional protections that you purchase, including prescription plans.

Regarding dental coverage, it is included in all Mutual of Omaha plans and is offered at a variety of levels of coverage, just like the prescription drug benefit. Also, the coverage is included with the plan of your choosing, with no additional premiums attached. Vision benefits included at no extra cost cover things like routine exams and corrective lenses. When comparing Advantage plans, this benefit is one of the biggest selling points.

  • Is your preferred plan available? Insurers dont always sell every plan, so check who sells the plan you want to buy in your area.

  • What are the premiums? Prices for the same plan can vary quite a bit between insurers, so check to find the most competitive rates.

  • Will your premiums change over time? Will the insurer charge more as you age, or can you lock in a price when you sign up?

  • Are there extras? Medigap plans core benefits are standardized, but some insurers include extras like discount programs or gym memberships.

Medicare Advantage Vs Medicare Supplement

Insurance/Payment

Medicare Advantage plans serve as a substitute for Original Medicare, providing that same coverage plus additional benefits like prescription drugs coverage . Meanwhile, Medicare Supplement plans, or Medigap plans, are sold by private insurance companies to people enrolled in Original Medicare to help fill the gaps of that coverage.

The 10 types of Medigap plans provide standardized coverage to beneficiaries nationwide and help pay for things like deductibles, coinsurance and copays. Because plan coverages are standardized, only monthly premium rates vary from provider to provider. Its also important to note that Medigap policies dont cover prescription drugs. A person enrolled in Original Medicare who wants prescription drug coverage needs to purchase a separate Medicare Part D plan in addition to any Medicare Supplement plan.

Meanwhile, Medicare Advantage policies are only standardized in that they must provide the same benefits of Original Medicare, as the plans serve as a direct substitute. After this threshold is met, private insurance providers can add any number of benefits and services to a planprescription drugs, dental care, vision care and moreto make them more comprehensive . Monthly premium rates for Medicare Advantage plans tend to vary dramatically based on location and the list of benefits provided.

Not surprisingly, Plan F is the most expensive at $231.85 a month, but the high deductible option drops that rate to $68.67 a month. While the Plan A rate has not changed since our last look at this company, the Plan F premium has gone up by about $15.

These rates still place Mutual of Omaha among the more expensive choices for Medicare Supplement insurance, with the same coverage available for much less elsewhere. This is especially true for Plan F, which we have seen as much as 20% lower from other companies.

Mutual Of Omaha Medicare Supplement Rate Increase History

Mutual of Omaha has a stellar record when it comes to premium rate increases. One way they keep their monthly premiums low, and the rates from increasing as high as many other carriers are due to them being a mutual company.

This means their shareholders are actually their policyholders. That means if you have a Mutual of Omaha Medigap policy, you are a shareholder. They in turn put profits back into the company to help keep prices and rate increases lower.

Another reason they keep their prices and increases lower is that they have strict policies on their underwriting. Since most Medicare Supplement insurance is underwritten, that means they have fewer people that are unhealthy which drives the rates up for their members.

Mutual Of Omaha Medicare Advantage Plans

Dental Plans For Seniors On Medicare

Medicare Advantage plans are a way to get your Medicare benefits in an all-in-one plan that combines Part A, Part B, and in most cases Part D of Medicare. These plans focus on wellness and additional perks like dental and vision care.

Mutual of Omaha started offering Medicare Advantage plans a few years ago in Texas and Ohio. The two plans available were the Mutual of Omaha CareAdvantage Complete HMO and the CareAdvantage Plus HMO. They are no longer offering their Medicare Advantage plan and sold that portion of the business to Essence Healthcare.

Is Mutual of Omaha a PPO or HMO?

Mutual Of Omaha used to offer a couple of HMO Medicare Advantage plans. They have discontinued that portion of their business and are focused on their Medicare supplement insurance plans.

These plans work more like a PPO however it isnt the same. A Medigap policy works as secondary coverage with Original Medicare.

Due to this reason youre allowed to go to any provider nationwide that accepts Medicare, without the need for a referral.

Medicare Supplement Plan F

Plan F offers the widest variety of coverage of any Medigap plan. This coverage includes:

  • copays and coinsurance with Medicare parts A and B
  • deductible for Medicare parts A and B
  • excess charges associated with Medicare Part B
  • emergency care during foreign travel

Like Plan C, Plan F also covers the Medicare Part B deductible. Because of this, its no longer available to people new to Medicare as of January 1, 2020.

Theres also a high-deductible version of Plan F. While the monthly premiums are lower for these plans, youll have to meet a deductible before it begins covering costs.
