When Can I Change Medicare Plan Options From Medicare Advantage To Medicare Supplement
To buy a Medicare Supplement plan, you must first leave your Medicare Advantage plan and return to Medicare, Part A and Part B administered under the federal Medicare program. But heres what you need to know about changing from Medicare Advantage to Medicare Supplement:
- You can only leave your Medicare Advantage plan during certain times of the year, in most cases: during the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period , or during the Medicare Advantage and Prescription Drug Annual Election Period . There are some exceptions, such as if you move from home to an institutional setting such as a nursing home, or from an institutional setting to home. Other exceptions are noted below.
- Once youve returned to Original Medicare, you can apply for a Medicare Supplement plan anytime you want but your acceptance into a plan isnt always guaranteed. For example, if you have health problems, the insurance company can base its decision on your health history in a process known as medical underwriting. The company can decide not to sell you a plan, or to charge you more because of your health condition.
Get To Know The Doctor
At the first visit, its important to make sure your doctors philosophy of care lines up with your own. Consider asking questions such as:
- Why did the doctor decide to go into primary care?
- What is his or her favorite thing about being a doctor?
- What does he or she wish more patients would do after they leave his or her office?
If your doctors outlook on patient care meshes nicely with your preferences, you may be more likely to follow his or her recommendations in between appointments. So take this into consideration when deciding whether to stick with a doctor following your first appointment.

From January 1 through February 14, Medicare Advantage members can disenroll from their MA plans. If youre enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, you might wonder why someone would want to switch to original Medicare. There are plenty of benefits to choosing a private, MA plan for your post-retirement coverage, but for some people, MA plans may actually offer too much coverage. Perhaps you signed up because you thought it was a great deal, only to realize later that you dont need comprehensive benefits and prescription drug coverage. Medicare Advantage isnt for everyone. If you need to drop your plan and move to original Medicare, here are some things to keep in mind.

Changing From Medicare Advantage To Original Medicare
Changing from Medicare Advantage to Original Medicare is a very simple process once youre ready and eligible to switch. There are three ways you can make the change:
Do I Need To Do Anything After I Enroll In A Medicare Advantage Plan
Once you enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan during Annual Enrollment, the plan will work with Medicare to transfer your benefits. You dont have to contact Medicare yourself. Your new plan will begin covering you on January 1.
If you have a stand-alone Part D prescription drug plan or other private Medicare plan, youll need to contact the plan provider directly to dis-enroll. Simply call the number on the back of your insurance member ID card.
When deciding to change to a Medicare Advantage plan, keep the following in mind:
- You may choose a different Medicare Advantage plan or return to Original Medicare during the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period, January 1 March 31.

Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment
You can make changes to your plan at any time during the Medicare Advantage open enrollment period from January 1 through March 31 every year. This is also the Medicare general enrollment period.
The changes you make will take effect on the first day of the month following the month you make a change.
Why Change From Ma To Medigap
Other than the qualifying scenarios listed previously, there are a few other reasons you may want to change from MA coverage to a Medigap plan.
- Youre looking for a larger provider network. Medigap covers the same network as Original Medicare, while MA plans typically have a smaller list of covered providers.
- You want assistance with deductibles, copays or coinsurance. While some MA plans offer $0 premiums and lower out-of-pocket costs, some Medigap plans cover all deductibles and most out-of-pocket costs, which could result in greater cost savings.
- You dont use the extra MA coverage. One of the primary benefits to a MA plan is the extra benefits offered, such as hearing, vision and dental. If you dont use those benefits, you may not need MA coverage.
- You dont want to have to get a referral. Often with MA plans, you need a referral or prior authorization to see a specialist or for certain services/procedures. Medigap plans do not require this.

Can I Change From Medicare Advantage To Medicare Supplement
This situation is a little more difficult if you expect not to be subject to medical underwriting when you make the change.
If you purchased Medicare Advantage when you initially were eligible for Original Medicare and you are not satisfied with your coverage, you will have special rights to purchase a Medicare Supplement policy if you return to Original Medicare coverage within twelve months of purchasing your Medicare Advantage plan.
If you decide to move to another state or another part of your state that your Medicare Advantage plan doesnt serve, you have special rights to go back to Original Medicare and then purchase a Medicare Supplement plan.
Typically, if the above-mentioned scenarios do not apply in your situation, you can purchase Medicare Supplement insurance that will be subject to medical underwriting.
Medicare Part B General Enrollment Period
For Medicare beneficiaries who didnt enroll in Medicare Part B during their initial enrollment window, enrollment is available during the first three months of each year , with coverage effective July 1. But a penalty may apply, with the premium increased by ten percent for each year that enrollment was delayed, if the person wasnt covered by a during the time that enrollment was delayed.
Most people get Medicare Part A automatically, and for free, when they turn 65. But people who dont have enough work history to qualify for premium-free Part A have to pay premiums if they want Part A coverage. If they choose not to enroll in Part A when they turn 65, they can do so later, during the January March general enrollment period. But as is the case with Part B, a late enrollment penalty may apply for those who have to pay premiums for Part A and sign up after their initial eligibility window ends.

When Can I Switch From Medicare Advantage To Medigap
There are a few times per year when you can leave a Medicare Advantage plan:
- Within the first 12 months of enrollment
If you enroll in an MA plan when you first become eligible, youre able to switch back to Original Medicare and Medigap within the first 12 months of the plan. This is so you can find the policy thats right for you, your budget, and your coverage needs.
- Open Enrollment Period . You can:
- Drop your MA plan and return to Original Medicare, where you can then apply for a Medigap plan
- Switch from one MA plan to another
- Add a stand-alone prescription drug plan
When You Change Where You Live
Moving or changing your current living situation usually triggers a Special Enrollment Period for many Medicare enrollees. If your new address isnt in your plans service area or your new address is within your plans service area but offers different options, then youll have the opportunity to change plans.
If you tell your health care plan provider that youre moving, your enrollment period begins the month before the month of your move, plus two months. However, if you tell your health care plan provider after youve moved, then your period begins that month and runs for two additional months.

Can I Switch From Medicare Advantage To Medigap
There are generally only a few situations that allow you to leave Medicare Advantage and pick up a Medigap plan without being subject to medical underwriting.
If you joined a Medicare Advantage plan when you were first eligible for Medicare and you arent happy with the plan, youll have special rights to buy a Medigap policy if you return to Original Medicare within 12 months of joining.
If you are moving to a different state or part of the state and your Medicare Advantage plan does not serve that area, you also have special rights to return to Original Medicare and pick up a Medigap plan.
Remember, If you had a Medigap policy in the past then left it to get an MA plan, when you return to Original Medicare, you might not be able to get the same Medigap policy back or in some cases, any Medigap policy unless you have a trial right or guaranteed issue right.
What Are The Benefits To Medicare Advantage
Medicare Advantage covers more than Medicare , allowing patients more options and flexibility. Patients can customize their Medicare Advantage to cover specific needs like wheelchair ramps, adult day care, and respite care. Additionally, the 2020 CARES Act expanded Medicare’s network to cover more telehealth services.

During The Oep For Drug Coverage
Two OEPs apply to Medicare Advantage plans. These are also the times at which a person can drop their Medicare Advantage plan and return to original Medicare.
The first enrollment period runs from each year. This is the OEP for all Medicare plans, including Medicare Advantage and Medicare prescription drug coverage.
During this time, a person can return to original Medicare. However, if they had prescription drug coverage through Medicare Advantage, they will need to enroll in Medicare Part B to maintain their prescription drug coverage.
Original Medicare Vs Medicare Advantage: Covered Services
When you have Original Medicare, you can see any doctor or specialist that accepts Medicare. You do not need to obtain a referral to see a specialist. Additionally, because plans do not change annually, you will not need to worry about your doctor leaving the plans network.
When you have Medicare Advantage, your coverage will be very similar to your employer group coverage. The majority of them are health maintenance organizations and preferred provider organizations.
Often, on a Medicare Advantage plan you will have a primary care physician that directs all your care. Therefore, you need a referral to see a specialist.
On top of this, physicians can leave the plans network at any time. You could find yourself searching for a new primary care physician at any point of the year without notice.
With Original Medicare, you receive coverage for a wide range of medical services. These include diagnostic tests, durable medical equipment, outpatient surgery, hospitalization, preventive services, and much more. However, Original Medicare does not include coverage for routine dental care, vision, or hearing care.
With Medicare Advantage, you will have coverage for the same services as Original Medicare. In addition, you can receive coverage for some dental, vision, and hearing care, or even prescription drug coverage. The downside is you may have trouble finding a dentist, eye care practitioner, or audiologist that accepts your Medicare Advantage plan.

Whats Medigap And Whats The Big Deal About Losing Medigap
Medigap is like buying extended coverage for Original Medicare. Medigap helps you cover out-of-pocket costs of coinsurance, copays, and deductibles. There are several types of Medigap policies to choose from:
- Medigap Plan A
- Medigap Plan L
- Medigap Plan N
* Please note that Medigap Plans C and F are no longer available to new Medicare beneficiaries. If you already have either Medigap plan and you leave the plan, you will not be able to re-enroll.
When you first enroll in Medicare, you get a signup period called guaranteed issue rights. This means you can enroll in a Medigap plan without medical underwriting.
Medical underwriting is the process of figure out a persons health insurance premium. Its based on several factors, including their health. It also means that a healthcare insurer can deny coverage to people who dont meet health standards.
Outside of your initial enrollment period, youre not offered guaranteed issue rights. That means youd be subject to medical underwriting. For people with pre-existing conditions, this means more expensive monthly premiums. Even denial of coverage.
Luckily, when you decide to try Medicare Advantage for the first time, youre given trial rights. These give you time to decide if you like your new health insurance. If you dont like your plan, you can switch back to Original Medicare and keep your guaranteed coverage.
