This situation has occurred many times over the years: a client gives me a copy of a letter from the Social Security Administration which contains a Social Security Number followed by the letters A, B, E or other letters, and then asks me to explain what type of benefit is indicated by the letter following the SSN. The BNC is unique to every document. In concert with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services efforts to remove the SSN from Medicare cards, in FY 2018 we plan to replace SSNs with BNCs on benefit verification notices, which account for approximately 11 million mailed documents.
