Does Medicare Cover Dental

What Medicare Does And Doesnt Cover | CNBC

Medicare doesnt cover most dental care. This includes cleanings, fillings dentures, crowns and so one. There are some exceptions to this under very limited circumstances which include some dental services prior to an organ transplant, as part of cancer treatment or reconstructive surgery after an accident are all covered by Medicare Part A hospital insurance. But these exceptions are limited to the specific reasons you may need such services.

Thankfully, there are several ways a consumer can add dental coverage.

What Is Alzheimers Disease

Alzheimers disease is a type of dementia that results in loss of memory, loss of thinking and language skills, and behavioral changes. It is a progressive and irreversible brain disease that attacks the brains nerve cells.

Minor Alzheimers symptoms may include:

  • Mild memory loss
  • Unfounded suspicions about friends and family members
  • Difficulty speaking, swallowing and walking

Alzheimers disease on its own is not fatal, but it does directly cause many complications that can result in fatal conditions such as pneumonia, infections, and an overall loss of bodily function.

Medicare Advantage And Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage Can Add Support For Vital Medications And Services

While Original Medicare covers most available Alzheimers treatments and services, it doesnt cover everything. For instance, Medicare Part B offers coverage for outpatient medications that are administered by a medical professional. It will not cover other general prescription medications. It also will not cover certain other services needed by many seniors. This is where Medicare Part C, also known as Medicare Advantage, and Medicare Part D Prescription Drug coverage can help.

Medicare Advantage provides coverage for all Alzheimers treatment services covered under Original Medicare. It also provides coverage for additional services that help seniors with cognitive issues maintain good health and hygiene. In addition to treatment for Alzheimers disease, Medicare Advantage plans often cover:

  • Medical supplies
  • Transportation to and from medical appointments

Medicare Part D plans will cover most prescription medications formulated to help combat the effects of Alzheimers. There are some prescription medications that your Part D plan may not cover, or for which there are restrictions in place. One such medication is Biogens new Alzheimers medication, aducanumab, which is also known as Aduhelm.

Medicare has limited coverage of Aduhelm to beneficiaries who have been accepted into clinical Phase III studies for the medication. These patients tend to be healthier than other beneficiaries who otherwise would have access to Aduhelm.

Medicare Part B helps cover the cost of medically necessary durable medical equipment if your doctor prescribes it for use in your home. Your copays and deductibles will still apply.

There is a long list of items covered, including:

  • Continuous Glucose Monitors examples include Dexcom and Libre
  • Insulin pumps and supplies
  • Before renting or purchasing any medical equipment, be sure to ask if the retailer or supplier participates in Medicare. Medicare will only provide coverage through suppliers who participate in the Medicare program.10

The care can include assistance with feeding, dressing and other normal daily activities. Medicare will not cover these services after youve recovered enough to be discharged following your surgery.

    Benefit Gaps And Supplemental Coverage

Medicare provides protection against the costs of many health care services, but traditional Medicare has relatively high deductibles and cost-sharing requirements and places no limit on beneficiariesâ out-of-pocket spending for services covered under Parts A and B. Moreover, traditional Medicare does not pay for some services that are important for older people and people with disabilities, including long-term services and supports, dental services, eyeglasses, and hearing aids. In light of Medicareâs benefit gaps, cost-sharing requirements, and lack of an annual out-of-pocket spending limit, most beneficiaries covered under traditional Medicare have some type of supplemental coverage that helps to cover beneficiariesâ costs and fill the benefit gaps .

Figure 4: Distribution of Types of Supplemental Coverage Among Beneficiaries in Traditional Medicare in 2016

    Medicare Advantage

In 2018, one-third of all beneficiaries were enrolled in Medicare Advantage plans rather than traditional Medicare, some of whom also have coverage from a former employer/union or Medicaid. Medicare Advantage plans are required to limit beneficiariesâ out-of-pocket spending for in-network services covered under Medicare Parts A and B to no more than $6,700, and may also cover supplemental benefits not covered by Medicare, such as eyeglasses, dental services, and hearing aids.

What Is Not Covered By Medicare

Money Minute: Medicare does not cover all payments — what to know

Rest assured that your Medicare coverage is going to meet the majority of your healthcare needs. But Medicare enrollment doesnt qualify you to receive any healthcare-related service or item you want. Medicare coverage comes with a few standard stipulations the service or equipment must be medically necessary, and the doctor must accept Medicare assignment. To have equipment covered by Medicare, you must receive it from a Medicare-approved supplier. Under these guidelines, Original Medicare generally does not include dental coverage, eye exams for glasses or hearing aids among other things. Medicare will cover them if you need prescription drugs, but youll need to enroll in a separate Medicare Prescription Drug Plan .

Medicare Advantage plans often cover services and items that Original Medicare doesnt. Medicare Advantage replaces Original Medicare but offers the same Part A and B benefits or coverage as Original Medicare. Along with receiving Part A and B benefits, Medicare Part C often bundles additional dental, hearing, vision and prescription drug coverage.

Are you eligible for cost-saving Medicare subsidies?

If you receive any of these services, you may need to pay full price if youre enrolled in Original Medicare even if your doctor says you need them. If you need any of these services or equipment, talk to your doctor to see if its covered.

Medicare Does Not Cover All Alzheimers Treatments

Unfortunately, there are some important Alzheimers treatments that Medicare does not fully cover or does not cover at all.

Original Medicare does not cover long-term care, prescription drug coverage, caregiving support and certain other services that may be needed for Alzheimers patients. As a result, people with Alzheimers may have high out-of-pocket costs.

    Does Medicare Cover Cataracts

Cataracts cloud the lens of the eye, making it difficult to see. Surgery is generally needed to correct the condition, and under original Medicare, you have two choices in this regard.

First, you can receive a basic lens replacement, paid in full by Medicare up to $2,000. Or, you can apply that amount to a replacement lens that not only addresses the cataract, but also corrects for near or farsightedness, and then pay the difference. Additionally, Medicare will pay for a pair of corrective eyeglasses or contacts that are necessary following cataract surgery.

As is the case with other medical procedures, with cataract treatment, youll still be responsible for your Part B deductible and 20 percent coinsurance. If you have a Medigap plan, it can pick up some or all of these out-of-pocket costs. And if youre on Medicare Advantage, your out-of-pocket costs may be lower, depending on what plan you have.

Medicare Part B covers two kinds of services: medically necessary outpatient care and preventive services

    Medically necessary outpatient care

Medicare Part B covers a variety of outpatient care and services when theyre medically necessary. According to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, medically necessary services are services or supplies that are needed to diagnose or treat your medical condition and that meet accepted standards of medical practice.

Here are some examples of medically necessary services covered by Medicare Part B:

    Medicare preventive services

Always ask your doctor to clarify if youâre not sure whether a specific service or item is covered by Medicare.

Medicare Advantage Plans May Offer More Benefits For Dementia Care

What is Not Covered by Original Medicare?
