2. Some people get Medicare Part A and Part B automatically and some people need to sign up for them.

People living in the United States and U.S. Territories who are already collecting Social Securityeither disability or retirementare automatically enrolled into Part A and Part B when theyre first eligible. These people will get a packet of information a few months before they turn 65 or receive their 25th month of Social Security Disability or Railroad Retirement Board benefits. At that time, they can choose to keep or decline Part B, but cant decline Part A unless they withdraw their original application for Social Security and pay back all Social Security cash benefits.

What Is The Medicare Waiting Period

The Medicare waiting period is a 2-year period that people need to wait before theyre enrolled in Medicare coverage. The waiting period is only for those receiving SSDI, and doesnt apply if youre 65 years old or older. Americans are eligible to enroll in Medicare up to 3 months before their 65th birthday.

This means that if you apply for SSDI benefits and are approved when youre 64, your Medicare benefits will begin at 65, just like they would have if you didnt receive SSDI. However, if you apply for SSDI at any other time, youll need to wait the full 2 years.

Medicare pays a large portion of the cost, but not all of it. Medigap can help cover what Medicare doesnt cover. But if youre under 65, it can be hard to find an affordable Medigap plan.

While some states require companies to offer at least one Medigap plan to people under age 65, others do not. In some states, Medigap plans are only available to certain types of beneficiaries, such as people with end-stage renal disease.

In several states, you cant buy a Medigap plan at all if youre under 65. And rates tend to go up from one year to the next. So, Medigap can be both hard to get and expensive if youre under 65. Often, the best solution is an Advantage plan.

While Medicare covers hospice for those who are expected to pass within six months, the waiting period prevents many with a terminal illness from using Medicare for hospice needs. A trial work period allows you to test your ability to work for 9 months. During this time you receive your full SSDI payment regardless of how much you earn as long as you continue to be disabled. The 9 months does not need to be consecutive. It will last until you accumulate 9 months within a rolling 60-month period. Certain other rules apply. Back to the Top

What is the extended period of eligibility?

If your disability benefits stop after successfully completing the trial work period because you worked at the substantial gainful activity level, SSA can automatically reinstate your benefits without a new application for any months in which your earnings drop below the SGA level.

So, for example, if after you complete the trial work period you may need to spend more on personal assistance or other impairment related work expenses for a particular month. This, in turn, may reduce our earnings below the SGA level for that month. SSA will provide you a SSDI check for that month.
