Introducing The Zoll Mbi Lookup Tool And Converter Solution

ZOLL has built a Medicare Beneficiary Identifier lookup tool and MBI converter into its latest billing software updates to simplify Medicare number lookup. It lets any provider or billing software vendor automatically identify and convert MBIs.

In addition to using our billing software, ZOLL can also execute batch queries for all Medicare patients in your databases. All you need to do is send ZOLL a batch file in Excel format with each patient record through their secure portal. From there, ZOLL will run their proprietary, enhanced MBI lookup tool and return the updated MBI numbers for all valid HICN and/or SSN submitted for your Medicare population within 24 hours.

If you are using another software vendor, you may need to obtain the new Medicare MBI number using one of the three methods below, which may be time-consuming and may affect reimbursement:

  • 835 remittance files: An Electronic Remittance Advice , also known as an 835, is an electronic transaction that provides information about claim payments. Many practices and billing companies utilize these so that claim payments post to their systems automatically.
  • MBI lookup on the MAC website: You can visit a MAC website to look up the MBI you need or go to cms.gov to find your MACs website by name or state.
  • Medicaid may return the MBI on an eligibility response

What To Do If You Already Receive Retirement Benefits

If you already receive retirement benefits, then your enrollment in Medicare will be automatic. This will be the case whether your benefits come from Social Security or the Railroad Retirement Board.

Three months prior to your 65th birthday, you should receive a package in the mail with your red, white, and blue Medicare card along with additional information about your enrollment. Who Does The New Medicare Beneficiary Identifier Affect

As of January 1, 2020, the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015 requires the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services to use MBIs on Medicare cards instead of SSNs. The change will impact every healthcare provider, physician, and supplier that submits claims to the Medicare Administrative Contractors for any services rendered to Medicare beneficiaries.

As a result of the MACRA, an MBI lookup tool will be added to all MAC web portals. No matter when services were provided, all providers must now use MBIs on all Medicare transactions. Only these identifiers will be accepted on Medicare claim submissions with few exceptions, although the IRS and the SSA will still use SSNs for tax and other similar purposes.

What Do I Do With Medical Bills

Pay attention to the mail you get for medical care. If the bill says that you owe money, you should:

  • Make sure your providers office has a copy of your Medicaid card for the month of the service.
  • If they have billed for the services but have not heard back from the health plan or Medicaid, ask if they will check on the claim. You can also call and check on the claim.
  • If you have called your providers office and checked on the claim but you still have problems, call an HPR.
  • You may have to pay your own medical bills for Medicaid covered services if:

    • You see a provider who is not part of your health plan
    • You receive services without showing your Medicaid Member Card to the provider

You will have to pay the bill for services you get:

    • When you were not eligible for Medicaid
    • During an appeal, grievance or hearing if the action is denied
    • If the services you receive are not covered by Medicaid

If you get services that Medicaid does not cover, you have to pay for the services yourself. You should sign a form that says:

  • What non-covered service you will have.
  • You know it is not a Medicaid covered service.
  • How much you will have to pay.
  • If you receive about a bill from a medical provider, you talk to the provider about the bill, and you still have a question, call Medicaid Information at 801-538-6155 or toll-free at 1-800-662-9651.

What Is My Medicare Beneficiary Identification Number

Your Medicare Beneficiary Identifier number is for billing and identification purposes.

On a Medicare card received before 2015, your Medicare Claim Number consisted of your Social Security number followed by a code of letters and sometimes numbers that have a specific meaning.

In more recent years, a randomly-generated combination of letters and numbers replaced this Medicare Claim number.

Removing Social Security numbers from Medicare cards further protects the identities of Medicare beneficiaries. The replacement number is called the Medicare Beneficiary Identifier, or MBI number.

Moreover, if you still have a Medicare card with your Social Security number on it, you can still use it. Nonetheless, getting a new Medicare card is certainly in your best interest.
