How Can I Protect My Medicare Card

Fraudsters use plastic card scam to target people on Medicare

A good alternative to laminating your Medicare card is purchasing a clear plastic ID card holder. These holders provide an equal level of protection as lamination but with the added ability to remove the card quickly and easily when needing to use or copy it.

Its a good idea to make a copy of your Medicare card and keep the original card in a safe place at home and the copy in your wallet or purse.

If you are visiting a health care provider you have seen before, you may not need to show your Medicare card, as they may likely have it on file. If you are visiting a new provider, you should bring your Original Medicare card with you. Sometimes a copy of your card or even a photo of your card may be accepted. Its a good idea to call ahead and ask what form of Medicare information is accepted.

If you belong to a Medicare Advantage plan, a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan or a Medicare Supplement Insurance plan, you should have another insurance card for that particular policy. You should take both your Original Medicare card and your private Medicare card when receiving care.

The Different Types Of Medicare Cards

Initially, youll receive a Medicare card in the mail. Usually this happens around three months before your 65th birthday or your 25th month of receiving disability benefits. The card will indicate whether you have Part A , Part B or both , along with the date your coverage starts. It will also show the phone number for Medicares help line.

Youll get a separate card if you join a Part D prescription drug plan.

Those who choose to enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan, such as an HMO or PPO, or another Medicare health plan that has prescription drug coverage, will get a card to use for hospital and doctor visits, as well as when filling drug prescriptions.

Those who have a Medigap policy will also get a card for that.

    Iowa Medicare Beneficiaries Targeted

    04/11/2021

Iowa senior citizens and Medicare beneficiaries are encouraged to be aware of current Medicare card scams in our state.

Its important for Iowans to protect their Medicare number and not give it to unknown callers, Senior Health Insurance Information Program/Senior Medicare Patrol Director Kristin Griffith said.

There are times when a health care provider will ask a patient for his or her Medicare number. Staff at Kossuth Regional Health Center confirmed that some departments may ask for your information as part of the registration or billing process.

“Typically, KRHC staff would ask for a patient’s Medicare number over the phone. We would also encourage them to bring a copy of their Medicare card to their next appointment,” said Megan Lenz, Revenue Cycle Manager for KRHC. “If you aren’t comfortable providing information like this over the phone, you can always bring your card and have a copy made for your records, even during a time when you don’t have an appointment.”

Lenz also recommended adding Kossuth Regional Health Center as a contact in your phone.

“This way if someone is trying to contact you from the hospital or clinic, the phone number won’t come up as ‘potential spam.'”

The News 8 On Your Side team is answering a question we are hearing from a lot of viewers: Is Medicare replacing its paper cards with new plastic cards?

The short answer is no. Medicare is not replacing your paper card with a plastic chip card.

Scammers tried this con a few years ago. They’ve apparently fired it up again, as a lot of viewers are telling us about getting this call.

Back in 2018, Medicare sent beneficiaries new cards that were designed to better protect against identity theft.

Social Security numbers were removed from the old cards and replaced with a random combination of letters and numbers.

That switchover took nearly a year to complete and gave scammers an opportunity to rip people off.

Once that was done, scammers moved on to trying to convince victims that Medicare is switching from paper cards to plastic cards with chips. Again, that’s not happening.

Of course, this is all designed to con victims into revealing their Medicare number, which can lead to identity theft and insurance fraud.

If you get any suspicious calls from someone claiming to be with Medicare, hang up and call the Medicare phone number on your card with any questions.
