Preventive Health Screening Tests You Should Consider

Cleared out the closet? Check. Organized your photos? Check. Dusted off your lamps? Check. Now that youve spring cleaned your house, its time to spring clean for your health! Health screenings are medical tests recommended by doctors to help identify health conditions before symptoms develop. Here are a few screenings to consider:

The History Of Ultrasound

The first people to take advantage of this technology were soldiers during World War II, and they used it to find objects that had been hidden, but the medical community has taken control of it in later years. The areas that take advantage of ultrasound the most are cardiology, ophthalmology and obstetrics. That is how most people have become familiar with ultrasound because it was being used to monitor the developing fetus.

At Life Line Screening, they use Doppler color flow ultrasound technology, and it provides them with excellent images of the subject. It can be conveniently used to determine the bone mineral density in patients suspected of being at risk for osteoporosis and in ankle-brachial index screening for those who may be at risk of peripheral artery disease. There are also screenings for carotid artery disease and abdominal aortic aneurysm as well.

Reasons To Have Screenings

You may have been in good health all of your life and are now wondering why you would need to have this type of screening done. The simple truth is that our health changes as we grow older, and we are more likely to develop age-related diseases when this occurs. This is the case even if you are lucky enough to be able to maintain the healthy lifestyle that you enjoyed in your younger years. This means that cardiovascular disease and stroke are possibilities for all of us. After you reach the age of 55, your risk of having a stroke doubles with every decade.

The scary thing is that your body experiences these changes without your knowledge, so you arent experiencing any warnings. The one thing that can ease your mind is regular screenings. When you have these screenings, your physician will find out about a medical condition in enough time to combat the problem. Life Line Screening has an excellent track record in finding potentially serious health issues. As a matter of fact, 62,000 people were found to be at risk of a cardiovascular condition or stroke in the last year alone1.

FCC Chairwoman RosenworcelSpotlights Lifeline Program

During Lifeline Awareness Week, FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel addressed the range of Americans who can receive support from the FCC’s Lifeline program.

Lifeline is an FCC program that helps make communications services more affordable for low-income consumers. Lifeline provides subscribers a discount on qualifying monthly telephone service, broadband Internet service, or bundled voice-broadband packages purchased from participating wireline or wireless providers. The discount helps ensure that low-income consumers can afford 21st century broadband and the access it provides to jobs, healthcare, and educational resources.

Lifeline During Coronavirus Pandemic

To help keep Americans connected during the coronavirus pandemic, the FCC has temporarily waived recertification and reverification requirements for subscribers residing on Tribal lands, and has extended those waivers until September 30, 2022. The latest FCC waiver order was released June 30, 2022 and it will help ensure that Lifeline subscribers are not involuntarily removed from the Lifeline program during this time of national crisis. All other Lifeline waivers previously in place as a result of the coronavirus pandemic have ended.

How Accurate Are These Tests

Test accuracy is defined by sensitivity and specificity from clinical trials. Sensitivity is the percentage of results that will be positive when a disease is present. Specificity is the percentage of results that will be negative when a disease is not present. Our lab analysis uses the same methodologies to what you would get in a commercial lab and accuracy levels are comparable.

HIV kits: Sensitivity 99.9% and Specificity 99.9%

Chlamydia: Sensitivity 96.1% and Specificity 98.0%

Gonorrhea: Sensitivity 97.8% and Specificity 99.2%

Trichomonasis: Sensitivity > 95% and Specificity 98%

Mammogram For Breast Cancer Screening

All women 40 years old and older are covered for one mammogram screening every 12 months under Medicare Part B. If youre between the age 35 and 39 and on Medicare, one baseline mammogram is covered.

If your doctor accepts the assignment, these tests will not cost you anything. Accepting the assignment means that your doctor agrees that they will accept the Medicare-approved amount for the test as full payment.

If your doctor determines that your screenings are medically necessary, diagnostic mammograms are covered by Medicare Part B. The Part B deductible applies, and Medicare will pay 80 percent of the approved amount.

These Tests Are A Way For Hospitals To Improve Their Brand And Name Recognition In The Community

A 2013 Washington Post / Kaiser Health News report noted that:

Inova Health System, one of the Washington, D.C., regions largest hospital networks, is partnering with a screening company called HealthFair to blanket the region with direct mail and advertisements promoting a $139 package of what it describes as five life-saving tests for heart disease and stroke. The tests, which usually are not covered by insurance, are performed in specially equipped buses, operated by HealthFair, that carry the Inova logo and travel to different locations

Inova doesnt pocket anything from the testing in fact, it pays HealthFair to put the Inova logo on the buses. But patients can sign a form allowing someone from the hospital group to contact them to discuss abnormal findings, and a list of Inova doctors is available on the buses.

Its a way to promote brand awareness and have someone sitting there who can say, I have just the doctor for you, said Mitch Morris, of Deloitte, a consulting firm whose clients include hospitals. If they hook someone up with a primary care physician, that sets up in many cases a lifetime of patronage to that health system.

Traditional risk factors include already having one of the listed illnesses, being a smoker, or having diabetes.

As Dr. Steven Nissen, chief of cardiology at the Cleveland Clinic noted:

The only tests that an average person needs are simple and cheap, Nissen says. These include measuring their weight, waist circumference, blood pressure and cholesterol.

The Cost Of The Tests At Life Line

The screening tests at Life Line are particularly segmented in different packages where most of them start at $149.

One of the most common packages is that of heart disease and strokes. It too costs $149 and comes with five different health screening diagnostics. Out of the five, four of them try to determine the risk factors for stroke and chronic vascular diseases, while the other is used to test for early signs of osteoporosis.

A $228 package, on the other hand, will not just include those five above mentioned tests but also a thorough health assessment to further identify the risk factors of six different chronic diseases.

Additionally, Life Line gives out membership schemes as well. If you opt-in for the Gold Membership, then for just $19.95 every month you will get six standard health screenings annually.

Life Line Screening: A Brief History

Calling Medicare Leads! [FREE Medicare Script]

Established in 1993, Life Line Screening was conceived with the sole purpose of reducing health risks such as diabetes and heart diseases in the elderly by conducting their preemptive screening at an earlier age.

The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention had once stated that over 100,000 lives could have been saved or rather, their mortality improved if a preventive screening was conducted. So, with this very motto of saving lives in mind, Life Line Screening offers a variety of tests to knip the possibility of future disease in the bud.

Over the years, Life Line Screening has grown to serve not just some of the major Medicare beneficiaries but some advanced care planning services as well. They have also assisted medical research centers with the help of their innumerable case studies to identify early signs of certain chronic diseases like Alzheimers and Dementia.

The skin cancers considered here are melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma. The latter two are often lumped together as nonmelanoma skin cancers, which also include other, far less common skin malignancies such Kaposis sarcoma and cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. These uncommon conditions are not the focus of general skin cancer screening programs.

Melanomas originate in cells that can produce melanin, a pigment found in the skin, hair, eyes, and sometimes elsewhere. Basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma originate in the epidermis, the outermost layer of the skin.

How Much Does The Average Sti Test Cost

STI testing can cost anywhere from $0 to $300. Your costs for an STI test will depend on several factors, including the test itself and where you go for testing. Your income can also be a factor since many providers offer sliding-scale costs for STI tests.

You wont pay anything for resting when youre using Medicare.

Medicare covers testing with no copayment or coinsurance. As long as your test is ordered by a doctor and youre eligible, Medicare will pay the entire cost.

Not all parts of Medicare cover STI testing. Youll need to make sure you have a Medicare plan that covers what you need before you get tested to avoid surprise costs.

How do I avoid extra costs?

Sometimes you go to the doctor for preventive care and end up with a charge on your bill. You can avoid costs when you go to your appointment by following these steps:

  • When you schedule your appointment, say that you want preventive care screenings and tests that are 100% covered by your plan.
  • Ask if any tests or treatments done during your appointment might not be considered preventive care.
  • Ask if lab work can be sent to a Blue Cross NC in-network lab to lower your costs.
