  • Ask your employer if they have or would consider offering an Employee-Assistance Program .
  • Ask your therapist if they will bill sessions under one partners plan, as long as one of you meets the criteria for a mental health diagnosis that qualifies for coverage.
  • Ask your therapist if they offer multiple session discounts if you book in advance.
  • Ask your therapist if they offer a payment plan.

Does Medicare Cover Counseling If You Have Medicare Advantage

Medicare Advantage is private insurance, which means that your coverage may be different depending on the specific plan you choose. At a minimum, Medicare Advantage must provide the same level of counseling and therapy coverage as Original Medicare.

Your Medicare Advantage plan may charge a flat copayment for counseling and therapy services instead of a percentage-based coinsurance. You may also need to get counseling from providers in the plans approved network of providers.

Also noteworthy, some Medicare Advantage plans require referrals and prior authorization for therapy and counseling services.

If you have a Medicare Advantage plan, check your plan brochure for specific information about mental health coverage. You can also call your plans Member Services department for further help.

Pros Of Using Insurance For Marriage Counseling: Specialized Behavioral Healthcare

If you or your partner are dealing with a serious mental health issue that requires longer-term, specialized behavioral healthcare to resolve, using health insurance for marriage counseling is probably your best option. Things like post-traumatic stress disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, major depressive disorder, or substance use disorders are serious conditions that can require intensive treatment.

Recovery from conditions like these often requires a variety of therapeutic interventions: individual therapy, family therapy with your partner, group therapy, medication management, etc. This gets very expensive very quickly, and unless youre very wealthy, most people cannot afford to do everything they need to do to get better without tapping into health insurance. Choosing just one treatment, like only seeing an individual therapist or only seeing a psychiatrist for medication, is not always sufficient.

Using your health insurance benefits can give you access to highly trained professionals who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of serious conditions, and youll be able to afford to engage in treatment as deeply as you need.

Advantages Of Using Insurance For Marriage Counseling: The Cost

Outside of a legitimate mental health treatment situation, people also use their insurance to pay for for relationship improvement through the loophole we discussed earlier in this article. Theoretically, using insurance for this type of marriage counseling can make it cheaper because, once youve met your deductible, you may only have to pay the cost of your copay every time you see your marriage counselor.

The financial caveat here is that for many health insurance plans, you might have a different deductible for mental health treatment than regular healthcare. Often, this difference is to the tune of several thousands of dollars. If you use your insurance for marriage counseling, you need to pay that deductible out of pocket before your coverage kicks in and your sessions are actually paid for.

This means that in many cases with high deductibles, you could complete an entire, successful course of effective couples counseling with a true relationship expert for less than what youd pay out of pocket. Many people are surprised to learn how little , and how affordable it really is.

By the time you factor in deductibles, the financial cost of marriage counseling is often no different, whether you go through your insurance or not. However, there can be huge differences in the marriage counseling process itself which you might wind up paying for too, in the end.

How Much Is Marriage Counseling With Insurance

Your copay should be equal to or less than the copay for most medical and surgical services covered in your plan.

For example: Lets say you have couples therapy insurance with a mental health diagnosis. The federal parity law passed in 2008 requires insurance providers to treat mental health like physical health.

The parity law applies to:

  • Employer-sponsored health coverage

  • Most Medicaid programs

You only pay one copay because treatment is technically for one person. The therapist would commit fraud if they charged two copays for two people attending a session. Theres also only one deductible for mental health and physical health services, thanks to the parity law.

The law also keeps insurance providers from capping the number of therapy sessions allowed per year. But your plan could require an evaluation after a certain number of appointments to determine whether ongoing treatment is medically necessary.

Using Insurance For Marriage Counseling: The Risks

If you are looking for relationship improvement rather than mental health treatment, you might be able to use your insurance, assuming youve met your behavioral health deductible, and assuming you can find a practitioner willing to submit claims indicating theyre providing treatment for a diagnosable condition.

However, if your goal is relationship improvement, affair recovery, to rebuild trust, or to improve communication, there are several very real risks you may face when trying to find a marriage counselor who takes insurance. Risks that may be highly detrimental to your relationship.

Crash Course On Cpt Codes In Therapy

CPT codes for mental health treatment are numerical codes used primarily to identify medical services and procedures furnished by qualified healthcare professionals .

When you actually look at these codes you can see plainly that, from the perspective of the medical field and the health insurance industry, there is no such thing as couples therapy or marriage counseling. There is only individual psychotherapy , family therapy with the patient present , family therapy without the patient present , and also group therapy. .

This is the specific, black-and-white reason why if you were to call your insurance company and ask if insurance covers marriage counseling, theyll say no. It doesnt exist in their system. However, medically necessary family therapy does.

This means that in order for your health insurance to cover marriage counseling or couples therapy, it would have to be coded as family therapy with patient present on the insurance claim form.

Does Medicare Cover Therapy With Prescription Drugs

If you receive mental health care services in an inpatient setting, Part A covers the medications your doctor prescribes.

If you receive outpatient counseling and therapy services, Part B typically doesnt cover any prescription drugs your doctor recommends.

If you have a Part D prescription drug plan, medications for treatment for mental health conditions are usually covered. Medicare requires all Part D plans to cover all antidepressant and antipsychotic medications approved by the FDA.

As Part D is private insurance, your copayments and deductible are set by the insurance company. You may have coverage restrictions with certain medications. For example, your plan may first require a trial with a less expensive medication before it pays for a more expensive one. You may need prior authorization for psychiatric medications, and there may be quantity limits that restrict how many doses you can get at one time.

You can find specifics about your prescription drug coverage in your plan formulary. The formulary is a list of medications covered by your plan and what you pay for each one. It also lists any restrictions and special requirements associated with each drug, such as prior authorization required for use and/or procurement.

Any counseling costs money, and couples therapy will not be covered by standard health insurance in most cases. In instances where you cant afford therapy, you may be able to get some help through local programs or nonprofit organizations. Here are some tips:

  • Speak to your doctor, and ask whether they can point you in the direction of some couples therapy services.
  • Contact your local college or mental health center. Discounted rates or programs may be available to you.
  • If you are a member of a church, contact it to see whether it offers couples therapy. You may be able to get some help for free.

  • Dont forget to check your partners health insurance for coverage, too.
  • There are services that offer online counseling for reasonable fees. Studies have shown good success rates. Keep in mind that online services usually come with a fee, even if they have a free trial. It may cost less than face-to-face counseling, but there are costs for any form of counseling.

    Does Medicare Cover Online Counseling

    Counseling Services Bloomfield Hills MI

Medicare didnt used to cover online therapy, but it does now. In 2020, Medicare removed many long-standing restrictions on its coverage of telemedicine.

In the past, Medicare only covered telehealth services provided in rural locations and other federally designated Professional Shortage Areas. It also covered telehealth services only when they were provided in a medical facility like a hospital or clinic. This ruled out in-home telehealth services like online counseling.

Thanks to the changes made to Medicare policy in 2020, Medicare no longer limits telehealth coverage to people in rural areas and now covers telehealth services provided in a persons home.
