What Should I Discuss With My Healthcare Provider Before Taking Desiccated Thyroid
Since thyroid hormone occurs naturally in the body, almost anyone can take desiccated thyroid. However, you may not be able to use this medication if you have a thyroid disorder called thyrotoxicosis, or an adrenal gland problem that is not controlled by treatment.
To make sure desiccated thyroid is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have:
- heart disease, angina
- coronary artery disease
- any type of diabetes or
- problems with your adrenal gland.
Desiccated thyroid is not expected to be harmful to an unborn baby, but your dose needs may be different during pregnancy. Tell your doctor if you become pregnant while taking this medicine.
Small amounts of desiccated thyroid can pass into breast milk, but this is not expected to harm a nursing baby. However, do not use this medication without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.

Did U No Medicare Is Removing Armour Thyroid From Formulary
Question posted by meyati on 9 Nov 2012
Starting New Years Day, Medicare is removing Armour thyroid extract for hypothyroid from its pharmaceutical formulary of approved medications. I received the notice today. My HMO wont cover the cost of my Armour thyroid now. What makes it ridiculousness is that I called some pharmacies about the approved thyroid and was told that theres a shortage of some of them-back ordered. It appears the new new thyroid hormone replacements have T 4 in them and are lacking T 3. Ive been reading articles and comments on how many people dont seem to have the ability to break T 4 down into T 3. These people just dont feel well-still gain weight-lose hair.
Hi pmwilson: I called my pharmacy as soon as I read your comment about Nature-Throid. They told me they didnt have any in stock, and had it back ordered for a while now, but cant seem to get it for now! Great! You have to do what you think will work for you. I also have Hashimotos.I called the naturopath that I used to go to and discussed it with her. I am going to wean off my Nature-Throid and go back to the thyroid supplements I used to take years ago before getting put on Synthroid by an endocrinologist. I did not do well on Synthroid either. I am not recommending that you do what I am doing. I will come back and post again and let you know how it is going for me. I just get tired of dealing with the side effects that come from prescription medications.
Thank you! I will look into that!

Use A Compounding Pharmacy
At this time, it can be difficult to find porcine thyroid tablet brands in pharmacies due to shortages and recalls. Instead of using another porcine tablet brand, you may be able to get an alternative thyroid medication at a compounding pharmacy, a type of pharmacy that can mix and prepare prescription medications onsite. They may have porcine thyroid powder, which they can use to make a compounded thyroid medication that contains the same amounts of thyroid hormone found in Armour Thyroid. The compounded alternative may also come at a lower price than Armour Thyroid. Search the internet to look up compounding pharmacies in your area.

Understanding Medicare Drug Tiers
A Medicare Part D plan categorizes drugs into five tiers:
- Tier 1 for the preferred generic drug, typically the least expensive option approved by the FDA
- Tier 2 for other generic drugs, which are usually slightly more expensive than the Tier 1 option
- Tier 3 for the preferred brand name drug, used for the least expensive brand name option for drugs that do not have generic equivalents
- Tier 4 for other brand name drugs, which are typically more expensive than the Tier 3 option
- Tier 5 for specialty and experimental drugs that may be unproven or require close monitoring
Your Medicare Part D plan uses this tier system to determine how much you must pay for your medications out of pocket. Higher tiers usually cost more than lower tiers.

The standard prescription drug for hypothyroidism and thyroid suppression is levothyroxine, also known by the brand name Synthroid. Levothyroxine contains a synthetic version of T4, and it is usually covered by health insurance.
Armour Thyroid alternatives typically include other desiccated thyroid extracts, which are not approved by the FDA. In addition, one or more of them may not be available at your local pharmacy. Instead of a local chain or grocery-store pharmacy, you may be able to purchase porcine thyroid tablets from a compounding pharmacy.
Armour Thyroid and levothyroxine alternatives include Thyrolar , which contains a combination of synthetic T4 and T3. Cytomel is another alternative that contains a synthetic version of T3. You should check your plans drug formulary to see whether your thyroid medication is covered.
Some over-the-counter medications and supplements may help relieve the symptoms of an underactive thyroid, but none of them are approved to replace low levels of thyroid hormones or help suppress thyroid growths, such as goiters, nodules, and thyroid cancer.
Carcinogenesis Mutagenesis And Impairment Of Fertility
A reportedly apparent association between prolonged thyroid therapy and breast cancer has not been confirmed and patients on thyroid for established indications should not discontinue therapy. No confirmatory long-term studies in animals have been performed to evaluate carcinogenic potential, mutagenicity, or impairment of fertility in either males or females.
Thyroid hormones do not readily cross the placental barrier. The clinical experience to date does not indicate any adverse effect on fetuses when thyroid hormones are administered to pregnant women. On the basis of current knowledge, thyroid replacement therapy to hypothyroid women should not be discontinued during pregnancy.
