Applying For A Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan

The best time to enroll in a Medicare Supplement plan is during your Medicare Supplement Open Enrollment period because your acceptance is guaranteed. It starts on the first day of the month in which you’re both age 65 or older and enrolled in Medicare Part B. Some states have additional Open Enrollment periods and Guaranteed Issue requirements.

If you apply outside of Open Enrollment or Guaranteed Issue periods, you may be denied coverage or charged more based on your health history. This does not apply to residents of Connecticut and New York where Open Enrollment and Guaranteed Issue is ongoing and Medicare supplement plans are guaranteed available.

Not just price. Look at the big picture

I was with a different carriers Medicare Advantage plan for years. But as I got older, I needed to see different doctors. The Medicare Advantage plan was ok, but the narrow network made it harder and harder for me to see a specialist convenient to my location when I needed to. Plus, it was an HMO. So premiums were low, but I needed to get a referral every time I needed to see a specialist.

That meant I had to make two appointments: One with my primary care doctor to get the referral, and then another separate appointment to see a specialist.

I got tired of that routine. I called Medigap Advisors and my personal benefits manager told me I should look at United Healthcares medicare supplement plans.

So far, its worked out great: I can see almost any doctor in town, and I dont need a referral to see a specialist. I can just make the appointment and go. If the service is covered by Medicare, I know its covered under my Medicare supplement plan.

My agent also told me that since I was leaving a plan that had built-in prescription drug coverage I also needed to buy a Medicare Part D plan to work on top of my new Medicare supplement plan. I did that, and I also added dental and vision coverage with a separate policy.
