How Can I Find Out Which Part D Drug Plans Cover The Prescription Drugs I Take

En español | Ideally, the best way to pick a Part D drug plan is according to the specific prescription drugs you take. Thats because no Part D plan covers all drugs, and the plans charge widely varying copays, even for the same drug. The Medicare plan finder program aims to make this comparison easier for you.

If you go to and enter your zip code, the names of the drugs you take, plus their dosage and how often you take them, the plan finder does the math to identify the plan that covers your drugs at the lowest out-of-pocket cost.

Alternatively, you can call Medicares help line at 800-633-4227 and ask a customer service representative to make the same search for you. Youll need to provide the exact name of your drug, plus the dosage and quantity you take. The rep can have the results mailed to you, at no charge.

Or you can contact your state health insurance assistance program , which provides personal help from trained counselors on all Medicare and Medicaid issues free of charge. Counselors are experienced in using the Medicare plan finder to help people find the Part D plan that best meets their needs and preferences. To find the main toll-free number of your SHIP , go to www.shiptacenter.org and select your state.

How Does It Work

Does Medicare Part A Or B Cover Dental: Victoza Medicare

This new class of medication is especially effective when it comes to lowering blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes. Trulicity, like other injectables for type 2 diabetes, comes in a prefilled syringe that you can administer yourself. Trulicity offers various dosage options based on your needs.

Medications like Trulicity and other GLP-1RAs act as a replacement or supplement to the natural hormone glucagon-like peptide . This hormone helps to regulate appetite and blood sugar by:

  • slowing digestion to prevent blood sugar from spiking after you eat
  • helping your body make more insulin to better manage rising blood sugar levels
  • preventing the liver from releasing too much glycogen into the bloodstream

Does Medicare Cover Trulicity

In the United States there are over 28 million people with type 2 diabetes and more than 84 million people living with pre-diabetes, a condition that often becomes type 2 diabetes if its left untreated.

Today, type 2 diabetics have better and easier drug options for controlling their blood sugar and A1C levels. One of these drug options is Trulicity, a medication specifically for type 2 diabetics. Trulicity works together with a healthy diet and exercise program to medically assist the body in releasing sufficient amounts of insulin so blood glucose and A1C levels improve. Your physician may feel that Trulicity is a good option for you.

How Does Trulicity Work?Trulicity is not insulin, it is a glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist that works in the same way as the hormone GLP-1. In other words, it acts by helping the body release its own insulin in a more natural way.

Trulicity is injected with a pre-filled pen containing one dose, taken once a week. It gives the pancreas a boost to release proper amounts of insulin according to high blood glucose levels. It also limits the amount of sugar released into the blood by the liver, and it slows the rate of food leaving the stomach. Your physician may prescribe Trulicity for you if you have type 2 diabetes and have not had successful results with blood glucose level control from other treatments.

How to Save Money on Saxenda

If you or your physician believe that the non-covered medication would be the most effective for treating your condition, the next thing you can do is to request a formulary exception. A formulary is a list of prescription drugs covered by the Medicare plan. Every Medicare Prescription Drug Plan and Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug plan has one, although the specific medications included by each plans formulary will vary. Formularies may change at any time youll be notified by your Medicare plan if necessary.

A formulary exception can be granted if your doctor and/or Medicare plan determines that the prescription drug you requested is medically necessary for your health, so you will need a written statement from your doctor or health-care provider to support your case. Once your Medicare plan has received the statement from the prescribing physician, it will make a determination whether or not to cover the non-formulary medication. For a standard formulary exception request, your plan will make its decision and notify you within 72 hours of receiving the prescribing doctors statement.

If waiting 72 hours for a decision could endanger your health, you also have the right to ask for an expedited formulary exception request. If you submit an expedited request, your Medicare plan must respond within 24 hours with its decision.
