Medicare is a national health insurance program in the United States for people who are 65 and older. Typically, a person 65 and older who worked for at least ten years and paid FICA taxes through an employer will be entitled to Medicare benefits. The same applies to an individual whose spouse worked for ten years for Medicare-covered employment.
Medicare has four parts: A, B, C and D.
Generally, Part A is free you can qualify for it automatically. It covers hospital visits, inpatient care, skilled nursing care, hospice care, and home health care in a hospital. The cost of this plan is zero once you turn 65 because youve paid taxes into the program during your working years.

Will Medicare Advantage Provide Coverage For Extended Travel Abroad
Some Medicare Advantage plans keep people on a plan if they are traveling abroad for extended periods, but seniors traveling outside of their Medicare Advantage plans service area for over six months could face disenrollment. Even seniors traveling within the United States or its territories may be disenrolled unless they notify the plan of changing geographic locations.
Seniors who are disenrolled under these circumstances can join a different Part C plan during a special enrollment period. If they dont choose a new plan, they will be automatically enrolled in Original Medicare.

Additional Insurance For International Travel
If youre on a budget, another option is to obtain supplemental travelers insurance. This isnt medical insurance, but is instead a short-term plan that covers emergencies while youre out of the country. You may also be able to buy short-term insurance through a travel planner.
The catch is that youll need to buy the coverage ahead of time for a specified itinerary. You cant buy travelers insurance once youve already left the country.
Also, not all supplemental plans cover preexisting conditions. If you have chronic health conditions, be sure to review the exclusions before you purchase travel insurance.

Medical Benefits Outside Of Bc
Due to COVID-19, the Government of Canada and Province of British Columbia have advised all residents to restrict non-essential travel:
If essential, urgent medical treatment is recommended and treatment is not available in Canada, your attending specialist in B.C. must carefully review your care and current travel advisories.
If you are eligible for coverage while temporarily absent from B.C., MSP will help pay for unexpected medical services provided the services are medically required, rendered by a licensed physician and normally insured by MSP. Reimbursement for physician services will be made in Canadian funds and payment will not exceed the amount payable had the same services been performed in B.C. Any excess cost is the responsibility of the beneficiary.
MSP does not provide any coverage for treatment provided by a health care practitioner outside the province .
PharmaCare does not provide coverage for prescription drugs or medical supplies when obtained outside B.C. Provincial assistance is also not provided to subsidize payment for ambulance services outside B.C.
Although the province does provide some coverage for emergency hospital care when you travel outside Canada, the province limits coverage to a maximum daily payment of $75.00, in Canadian funds.
Can I Still Keep Medicare In The Us If I Am Living Abroad
If you are currently living abroad, you can continue to keep your Medicare coverage in the US with no additional costs, if you are eligible for the premium-free Part A . Part A is free in most cases, but the same is not for Part B, which covers outpatient care and other healthcare providers services. Since Part B coverage does require you to pay a premium, then in order to keep the plan, you will have to continue paying the monthly installments.
But remember that despite keeping your enrollment in Medicare active, you wont be able to actually use Medicare to pay for medical expenses if you are outside the US or its territories.
So, if you do not intend to return, you have medical insurance in the country you are living, or you are volunteering in a non-profit organization which is tax-exempt, you can re-consider keeping the enrollment active.
Also remember that if you stop your Part A enrollment, you may be required to pay back all the benefits you have received to the Social Security Administration .
