Will Medicare Advantage Provide Coverage For Extended Travel Abroad

Some Medicare Advantage plans keep people on a plan if they are traveling abroad for extended periods, but seniors traveling outside of their Medicare Advantage plans service area for over six months could face disenrollment. Even seniors traveling within the United States or its territories may be disenrolled unless they notify the plan of changing geographic locations.

Seniors who are disenrolled under these circumstances can join a different Part C plan during a special enrollment period. If they dont choose a new plan, they will be automatically enrolled in Original Medicare.

Traveling Internationally With Original Medicare

Made up of Part A and Part B , Original Medicare is the backbone of most retirees health-care coverage. But, for the most part, it doesnt cover you unless both your feet are firmly planted on US soil. There are a few exceptions. You could receive coverage in the following situations:

  • You live in a border town in the US, but the closest hospital is in another country.
  • You need emergency dialysis .
  • Youre on a cruise ship within six hours of a US port with a US-approved doctor.
  • Youre traveling to or from Alaska via Canada, and an emergency occurs. To receive coverage, you must be on a direct route and travel without delay.

If you receive coverage in one of these situations, be prepared to file your own insurance claims. Foreign hospitals arent required to file Medicare claims for you like US hospitals are.

Medical Benefits Outside Of Bc

Due to COVID-19, the Government of Canada and Province of British Columbia have advised all residents to restrict non-essential travel:

If essential, urgent medical treatment is recommended and treatment is not available in Canada, your attending specialist in B.C. must carefully review your care and current travel advisories.

If you are eligible for coverage while temporarily absent from B.C., MSP will help pay for unexpected medical services provided the services are medically required, rendered by a licensed physician and normally insured by MSP. Reimbursement for physician services will be made in Canadian funds and payment will not exceed the amount payable had the same services been performed in B.C. Any excess cost is the responsibility of the beneficiary.

MSP does not provide any coverage for treatment provided by a health care practitioner outside the province .

PharmaCare does not provide coverage for prescription drugs or medical supplies when obtained outside B.C. Provincial assistance is also not provided to subsidize payment for ambulance services outside B.C.

Although the province does provide some coverage for emergency hospital care when you travel outside Canada, the province limits coverage to a maximum daily payment of $75.00, in Canadian funds.

Can I Still Keep Medicare In The Us If I Am Living Abroad

If you are currently living abroad, you can continue to keep your Medicare coverage in the US with no additional costs, if you are eligible for the premium-free Part A . Part A is free in most cases, but the same is not for Part B, which covers outpatient care and other healthcare providers services. Since Part B coverage does require you to pay a premium, then in order to keep the plan, you will have to continue paying the monthly installments.

But remember that despite keeping your enrollment in Medicare active, you wont be able to actually use Medicare to pay for medical expenses if you are outside the US or its territories.

So, if you do not intend to return, you have medical insurance in the country you are living, or you are volunteering in a non-profit organization which is tax-exempt, you can re-consider keeping the enrollment active.

Also remember that if you stop your Part A enrollment, you may be required to pay back all the benefits you have received to the Social Security Administration .
