How Does The Medically Needy Spend
Medically Needy provides Medicaid eligibility to qualified individuals and families who may have too much income to qualify for regular Medicaid programs. Individuals and families who meet all Medicaid program requirements, except that their income is above those program limits, can spend-down or reduce their income to Medicaid eligibility levels using incurred medical expenses.
Medicare Beneficiary Identifier Lookup Tool
The Medicare Beneficiary Identifier Lookup tool allows providers to use our secure eServices online portal to obtain the new MBI number when patients do not present their Medicare card. If you do not already have access, now for access to eServices to use the tool.
As background, the New Medicare Card Project was established in the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015 which mandates the removal of the Social Security Number-based Health Insurance Claim Number from Medicare cards by April, 2019. CMS began mailing new Medicare cards with the MBI on April 2, 2018.
Beginning in January, 2020, providers may only use MBIs, with limited exceptions.To submit an inquiry you must do the following:
- Once logged into eServices, click on the MBI LOOKUP tab located in the header of the portal
- Complete the required* fields:
- Social Security Number

In the event that your MBI Lookup request does not result in a successful response, eServices will display an error message to assist you. If any required fields are left blank or are not in a proper format, a message will appear advising you which fields to correct.

Louisianaâs Medicaid Program provides payment for special long term care support services, as well as full Medicaid health coverage, to eligible people who, because of their medical condition, require assistance with activities of daily living . Are There Exceptions To The Mbi Requirement
MBIs are required, with three exceptions:
- Medicare appeals: When you file an appeal, you can choose whether to use an MBI or an HICN.
- Checking the status of a claim: If you filed a claim before January 1, 2020, you can use an HICN to check the status of a claim. If you filed it after that date, youll have to use the MBI.
- Span-date claims: Some providers submit single claims for services that span multiple days. These might include instances of inpatient treatment or home health. If the services rendered concluded before December 31, 2019, you may submit a claim using the HICN or the MBI.

Here are some important things for seniors to know about how Medicare and the Social Security Administration function.
- Medicare generally wont call you, except in limited circumstances. One such exception is if you have called 1-800-MEDICARE and requested a return call.
- Medicare will never call or come to your home uninvited to sell products or services.
- SSA representatives may call Medicare beneficiaries if they need more information to process applications for Social Security benefits or enrollment in certain Medicare Plans, but, again, this is rare.

How To Find A Medicare Number
The Social Security Act of 1964 established the Social Security Administration which oversees Medicare, a health provider for individuals age 65 and older or under age 65 with certain disabilities. Locating a Medicare number is necessary for obtaining a replacement card and verifying benefits.
Look at your social security card. Your social security number is the first part of your Medicare number for part A and B benefits. The second part is the letter A or B, depending on which benefit you are needing the number for. Part A is inpatient hospital benefits and Part B is outpatient medical benefits. For example, if your social security number is 111-22-3333, then your Medicare number for Part A benefits is 111-22-3333-A. If you do not have a social security card or your Medicare card, contact your local SSA office for a list of documents required for obtaining a replacement card.
Contact your Medicare Advantage plan provider, if you have a Medicare Advantage plan. Provide the plan provider with your social security number, full name and date of birth, then the provider can provide you with your Medicare Advantage plan number. Medicare Advantage plans act as a supplement to Part A and B coverage.
Contact your Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage provider. This number is located on the provider’s website and on many documents from the provider. You will need your date of birth, Social Security number and full name for obtaining your number.

There you can follow the steps to create an account and provide your information such as whether or not you have a disability, your income level, and enroll any minor dependent children you have in health coverage programs such as the Childrens Health Insurance Program, otherwise known as CHIP.
Another method you can use to enroll in the Medicaid program is to directly contact your states Medicaid agency. This 10-digit identifier is the number that must be used on claim forms submitted to payers by individual and organization health care providers who meet a broad definition of a covered entity under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, or HIPAA. Who Can Get an NPI
