Kardiamobile Versus Apple Watch Which Do I Usually Recommend

I typically recommend the KardiaMobile. My patients find it easy to use and the device provides good quality ECGs good enough that my office can determine the rhythm when sent a copy of the ECG. Many people ask me, what do you recommend, a KardiaMobile or an Apple Watch? My answer is usually based on whatever the patient is truly looking for. For someone looking strictly for an at home monitor for atrial fibrillation, the KardiaMobile is what I usually recommend, plus it is much cheaper then an Apple Watch. But for someone who likes smart watch technology, who wants the messaging, phone, and music options together with AFib monitoring, then the Apple Watch can be a good option.

Anthony Pearson Md Explores The Pros And Cons Of These Consumer Devices

AliveCor introduced Kardia Pro in March 2017 as a cloud-based software platform that allows physicians to monitor patients who use the Kardia mobile ECG device.

I have been utilizing the Kardia mobile ECG device since 2013 with many of my atrial fibrillation patients and have found it be very useful as a personal intermittent long-term cardiac monitor.

I signed up for the Kardia Pro service about 3 months ago, and all of my patients who purchased Kardia devices prior to March 2017 were migrated automatically to Kardia Pro by AliveCor.

New users who acquire a Kardia device must sign up for the Kardia Pro service at $15 per month to connect with a physician.

I think this is money well spent, and I’ll demonstrate how the service works with a few examples.

Monitoring AF Patients

I saw a 68-year-old man with persistent Afib that was first diagnosed at the time of pneumonia in late 2017.

He underwent a cardioversion after recovering from the pneumonia but quickly reverted back to Afib. His prior cardiologist offered him the option of repeat cardioversion and long-term flecainide therapy for maintenance of normal sinus rhythm , but he declined.

When I saw him for the first time in the office a month ago, I listened to his heart and, to my surprise, noted a regular rhythm: An AliveCor recording in the office confirmed he was in NSR. The patient had been unaware of when he was in or out of rhythm.

This knowledge allows me to make more informed treatment decisions.

Which Type Of Heart Monitoring Device Is Best For You

For medical-grade devices, your provider will recommend the device thats best for you, depending on your symptoms and health plan.

For consumer-grade devices, it will depend on your age, health conditions, what you are trying to achieve, and, of course, the cost.

Don’t make an impulse purchase, Cho said. Even though there is a lot of information available about cardiac monitoring, its most helpful to talk with a provider about which device is the right fit and how the device can help you.

Older people, for example, might benefit from the data gleaned by the latest Apple Watch for atrial fibrillation detection, for example. But if the screen is too small to see, or the technology is too complicated, they may not be able to make use of the data.

Make sure that you understand what it is you’re trying to measure, rather than just saying cool, Cho said. And make sure that they’re at least FDA approved for what they’re stating that they’re trying to do.

Remember: With medical-grade devices, your heart activity data will automatically transfer to an expert for interpretation. Personal devices will collect information but typically will not forward your data to your physician. In other words, a personal heart monitoring device is never a substitute for a specialist. So, if you have questions about your heart data, be sure to ask your healthcare team.
