If you have Medicare, you’ll pay 20% or less of the total cataract surgery bill. The surgery may even be free if you have a plan with a $0 outpatient copayment.

On average, those who only have Original Medicare are paying about $200 to $800 out of pocket per cataract procedure. Below are the average out-of-pocket costs for cataract surgery paid by someone who has Medicare.

The cost of cataract surgery varies widely, and how much you pay will vary based on the following factors:

• Type of facility where you get the surgery done: Costs are lower if you get surgery at a stand-alone surgery center versus an outpatient hospital unit.

How Can I Know If My Lens Implant Is Covered

There are multiple types of cataract surgeries, and some of the more complex or involved procedures that will not be covered by Original Medicare. With most cataract surgeries, the type of lens that is used is called a monofocal lens. It is important to note that Medicare will only cover monofocal lens implants.

Lenses that arent covered by Medicare are:

• Multifocal
• Toric

Does Medicare Cover Radiation Therapy

Medicare Part A or Part B may cover radiation therapy. Part A will provide coverage for radiation therapy if youre an inpatient, and youll pay the Part A deductible and coinsurance. Part B will provide coverage if you receive radiation therapy as an outpatient or as a patient of a freestanding clinic. You will pay 20 percent of the Medicare-approved amount and be responsible for the Part B deductible if therapy is done at a freestanding clinic.

While Medicare does not pay for routine vision care such as eye exams for glasses or contact lenses, it does cover diagnosis and treatment of certain chronic eye conditions, including cataracts.

That coverage might include corrective glasses, contacts or lens implants related to your cataract care. You will pay coinsurance amounting to 20 percent of the Medicare-approved amount for corrective lenses after each cataract surgery with an implanted lens, as long as the supplier is enrolled in Medicare.

The Medicare Part B deductible applies, meaning you must have reached your Part B deductible for the year before Medicare will pay its share.

• Phacoemulsification. This type uses ultrasound to break up the cloudy lens before it is removed and an intraocular lens is inserted to replace the cloudy lens.

Insurance companies are businesses, just like any other, and they can sometimes be swayed to make decisions based on public pressure. If they offer benefits that other companies simply can’t or will not touch, it could become a selling point for them that allows them to sell even more insurance policies to people who need them.

You may be surprised to learn that vision insurance is not necessarily the route to take for cataract surgery. While the Affordable Care Act has required that insurance companies cover some treatment options like mental health care, the act does not require vision insurance to cover some surgeries like cataract surgery. Most health insurance companies, which cover checkups, prescriptions, and other types of surgery, consider cataract surgery to be medically necessary, and they will cover at least part of the procedure.

However, the amount of your cataract surgery that is covered can vary. There are some diagnostic procedures and pre-surgery treatments that may be covered by your insurance or not, depending on what company covers you.

• A scan of the eye to determine the appropriate corrective power for the intraocular lens .
• The traditional cataract surgery itself.

Yes, Medicare will cover chemotherapy if you have cancer. Medicare Part A provides coverage if youre a hospital inpatient, and Part B will provide coverage if you receive chemotherapy in a hospital outpatient setting, doctors office or freestanding clinic.
