What Is The Difference Between Parts B And D

Seniors can get help with Medicare Plan D coverage

Medicare Part B covers the care you get outside the hospital. It also covers some drugs and vaccines that Part D doesnt cover, such as:

  • Injectable and infused drugs

  • Pneumococcal vaccine

  • Most drugs for outpatient or at-home dialysis

Medicare Part D covers prescription medications you get at a pharmacy or other outpatient location that isnt a hospital or inpatient treatment center. With Part D, you can buy a stand-alone prescription drug plan from a private company or get coverage through a Medicare Advantage plan if you dont have creditable drug coverage from another source, such as a former employer or union. If you put off getting creditable drug coverage for too long, you could face a late enrollment penalty that lasts for as long as you have Medicare.

If youre Medicare-eligible or take care of someone who is, you can contact the State Health Insurance Assistance Program, or SHIP, with questions on anything Medicare related. Its trained benefits counselors offer unbiased guidance for free.

Part C Medicare Advantage Private insurance alternative to traditional Medicare that bundles parts together, often with added benefits such as vision, hearing, and dental care

What Is Ahip Certification

AHIP certification is an industry recognized method of proving that you have completed the required Medicare training courses, and you understand how to sell medicare in a way that is compliant with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services .

AHIP certification is accepted by all and required by most carriers if you want to legally sell Medicare Advantage or Prescription Drug Plans for the current certification year.

Be aware that while most carriers will require AHIP certification, it will only serve as a pre-requisite to completing additional carrier specific certifications. Check our carrier specific certification page for more details.

I Want To Switch From Medicare Advantage To Traditional Medicare But I Still Want Drug Coverage What Do I Need To Do

If you switch from a Medicare Advantage plan to traditional Medicare and you want drug coverage, you can sign up during the Medicare Open Enrollment period for a stand-alone prescription drug plan in your area. Your new coverage will take effect on January 1. You can also switch from Medicare Advantage to traditional Medicare during the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment period between January 1 and March 31, when you can sign up for a stand-alone drug plan to add drug coverage. In this case, coverage begins the first day of the month after the plan gets your enrollment form. How Do I Take The Ahip Test

To take the online test you must register through the AHIP website. If you have registered any time after June 2012 then you wont need to register again.

Simply login through the AHIP website using your National Producer Number as your user name and the password you used when you logged in last.

The Ahip test is a 50 question open book test and is administered online with a 2 hour time limit. You must pass both parts of the test to be AHIP certified for the current year.

PSM is proud to offer our agents a discount for AHIP certification at $125. The test normally costs $175 for 3 attempts and you must score a 90% to pass. If you fail all 3 attempts you will need to apply again for 3 more attempts.

Once you have completed the AHIP certification you must then upload it to the website of each carrier you wish to work with.

Upon uploading the certification, the carrier will normally have additional carrier specific training listed in order to satisfy their requirements to sell.

Be aware that many carriers will not accept 3 failures in a given year. If you dont pass on the 3rd attempt, you would not be able to sell their products for that year, even if you did go on to pass the AHIP test.

There are a number of self-study courses available to help prepare you for the test. We strongly recommend you take training courses that cover the same material, to ensure youre prepared to take the test.

You can access the carrier specific certification instructions from the links below:

Who Are The Ship Counselors

SHIP counselors are highly trained volunteers who live in your local community.

SHIP counselors are unbiased. They dont work for insurance companies, and they dont profit from your enrollment decision. Their goal is to provide you with personalized advice and up-to-date information about all aspects of Medicare.

Its no secret that Medicare can be confusing. Your healthcare needs can also change over time, and you may wonder if you can or should make changes to your coverage. SHIP counselors can advise you on many topics, including:

  • how and when to enroll in Medicare
  • the different parts of Medicare, and what each covers
  • differences between Part D prescription drug plans and Medicare Advantage plans and how to choose the right one for you
  • deciding if you need a Medigap plan
  • how to join or leave a plan
  • what to do if you choose a plan you dont like
  • what out-of-pocket costs you might have with your current or future plan

Why Are Some Of Medigaps Plan Names Identical To Medicares Parts

The other Medicare program name that aptly describes its function is Medigap, also known as Medicare supplement insurance. It fills in the gaps, taking care of deductibles and copayments for enrollees who have original Medicare .

Medigap plans arent the same as Medicares four major parts . But the 10 federally standardized Medigap plans, first introduced in 1992, make up an alphabet soup of redundancy and potential confusion: A, B, C, D, F, G, K, L, M, and N.

That means, in most states, you can buy Medigap Plan A or B to protect you from out-of-pocket costs from Medicare Parts A and B. Of course, you can also buy a Medigap Plan G in many states to shield you from Medicare Parts A and B costs and so on.

But you can no longer buy Medigap Plans E, H, I, or J. If you already have any of those four plans, you can keep them, but they have been closed to new buyers since 2010. As some Medigap plans are restricted, typically by new laws, insurance agents may encourage existing enrollees to switch to newly created plans. These new plans may be more affordable and often come with letter names from further down the alphabet.

Government programs rarely take their cues from flashy tech or car companies. But imagine if the naming culture of private enterprise had influenced Medicare supplement insurance so youd now have a choice of a Medigap Tiger or Jaguar plan instead.
