UroLift Offers Relief for BPH

When Jeff Brenner first began experiencing bothersome urinary symptoms in his 40s, he attributed it to middle age and figured it was something he could live with.

An enlarged prostate compresses on the urethra, making it difficult for urine to flow. The UroLift Device is placed through the obstructed urethra to access the enlarged prostate. The device compresses the tissue and delivers tiny implants to lift and hold prostate tissue out of the way, thus opening the urethra. The permanent implants keep the tissue in place, like tiebacks on a window curtain. The UroLift Device is removed, leaving an open urethra for urine to flow.

Big Prostate Big Problems

With a healthy prostate, there is a wide-open channel that accommodates the urethra and allows urine to easily flow out of the bladder. With an enlarged prostate, the lobes press on either side of the urethra, cutting off the flow of urine. As a result, the bladder has to generate a lot more pressure to push urine through the urethra.

For some men the blockage and symptoms interrupt their sleep, make it difficult to play a round of golf, go on a trip or just enjoy dinner or a movie out. Instead, their day and night revolve around being close to a bathroom at all times. Some men are hesitant to leave their homes and become shut-ins. Many feel isolated, depressed and sleep-deprived.

For a large part of our lives, we take urinary function for granted, says Dr. Nuss. We dont want to think about it. When a man has to plan his entire day around it, it takes a toll on his quality of life.

Q: Is The Urolift Procedure Done Through The Anas Or The Penis

A: The UroLift System treatment is a straightforward procedure that is performed by a urologist. The procedure may be performed under local or general anesthesia and you may be given medication to feel comfortable during the treatment.

Your urologist performs the UroLift procedure by pulling the lobes in your prostate apart to relieve compression placed on the urethra.

How Can I Find Out If My Insurance Company Will Cover The Rezm Procedure

We recommend a verification of benefits be done with your insurance company several days, if not weeks, in advance of the scheduled Rezm procedure. The verification of benefits is a crucial component to understanding the exact coverage criteria under your plan. Your plan may require a Prior Authorization and/or allow for a Pre-determination. These processes are meant to allow your health insurance company the opportunity to evaluate your treatment plan and specifics of the request to review for medical necessity. Please ask your doctors office about your anticipated coverage options.

What Are The Symptoms Of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia

UroLift – BPH Solution

While symptoms may be experienced differently by each individual, the most common symptoms of BPH may include some or a combination of the following:

Frequent urgency to urinate Frequent urination during the night Inability to urinate

Men rarely experience symptoms of BPH before the age of 40 while more than 50% of men have some symptoms of an enlarged prostate in their 60s. More than 90% of men over 70 experience some symptoms associated with BPH.

Diagnosis of BPH

BPH is sometimes diagnosed during a routine rectal examination at the doctors office. If you suspect that you may have BPH, there are tests such as a urine study flow, urinalysis, trans-rectal ultrasound, or cystoscopy to help diagnose BPH.

The procedure is effective in patients with at least some form of bladder contraction still present, bi-lobar hypertrophy, and a prostate size of 80g or less.

How Does It Work?

The UroLift device is inserted into the obstructed urethra in order to access the affected prostate. It effectively compresses the surrounding tissue and uses small implants to lift the tissue and hold it out of the way of the blocked urethra.

The squeezing can create a blockage of the urine flow. The symptoms of BPH can include difficulty starting urination, a reduced stream, increased need to urinate, and the inability to completely empty the bladder.

If left untreated, BPH can develop into urinary retention or incontinence, bladder stones, and damage to the bladder and kidney.

What Can I Expect After The Urolift Procedure

After the procedure, a man can expect to experience some blood in the urine or a burning sensation when urinating. Most of the time a man wont even need a catheter after the procedure. There is minimal downtime after the procedure. Many men will experience relief from their symptoms as soon as two weeks after the procedure. Some men may also experience discomfort or pain when urinating or discomfort in the pelvis for 2 to 4 weeks after the procedure.

What Are The Benefits Of Urolift

Many men with BPH use medicines to control symptoms. However, these medicines can cause side effects like dizziness, nasal congestion and sexual dysfunction. These medicines also stop working when the man stops taking them, which means many men must choose between unpleasant side effects or BPH symptoms. With the UroLift®, patients dont experience these unpleasant side effects, and most men notice BPH symptoms go away within 30 days. Studies have also shown that the UroLift® has fewer side effects compared to transurethral resection of the prostate , which is a surgical procedure used to treat BPH. TURP can cause side effects like sexual dysfunction and incontinence. Because of where the UroLift® implants are placed on the prostate, they are less likely to damage nerves and cause these problems. The UroLift® procedure also has a faster recovery time compared to TURP and usually doesnt require a catheter .

Q: Can My Prostate Be Too Large For Urolift

A: In a Q& A with Dr. Daniel Rukstalis told Harvard Health: Its FDA-approved for men 45 and older with prostates up to 80 grams in size . But my view is that UroLift works best in prostates ranging from 25 to 60 grams. About a third of men with BPH also have whats called a median lobe, or a bit of prostate tissue that protrudes up into the bladder. We just completed a clinical trial showing that UroLift works well for these men too. On the basis of that study, the FDA approved UroLift for men with median lobes in early 2018. Well typically evaluate potential candidates with a pelvic ultrasound, which provides a lot of information about the health of the bladder and the size and shape of the prostate.
