There may be a time when you need a Medicare replacement card sooner than the 30 days it typically takes to arrive in the mail. For instance, you may have a doctors appointment already scheduled, or you need a prescription refilled soon.

If that is the case, Social Security or the RRB can provide a letter for you to use as temporary proof of Medicare coverage. This letter will be mailed to you in about 10 days. To request such a letter, contact Social Security or the RRB.

You can order a replacement Medicare card online, using the Social Security website. Youll be directed to log into your My Social Security account, where youll be able to request a new card. The card will be mailed to the address on your account within 30 days so make sure your address correct. You can also apply for your replacement card at your local Social Security office, but if you plan to do so you can expect long lines or waiting periods at some Social Security offices.

Medicare Requirements Impacting Your Calpers Health Coverage

If youre Medicare eligible and you lose your Part A and/or Part B, youll be disenrolled from the CalPERS Medicare health plan. Your disenrollment from Part A and/or Part B may result in cancellation of your CalPERS health coverage.

CMS requires members to live in the approved plan service area and list a residential address. Post Offices Boxes are not permitted.
