As people across the country receive new, safer Medicare cards in the mail, advocates are warning about fraudulent callers who try to dupe people into paying money or divulging personal information.

The government is gradually replacing Medicare cards for the 60 million people covered by the federal health plan. Previously, the cards used the recipients Social Security number as his or her Medicare number, which posed a risk of identity theft. Congress mandated a change in 2015.

It took a very long time, but its in the works, Sue Greeno of the nonprofit Center for Medicare Advocacy said.

The new cards use an 11-character Medicare identifier that contains both numbers and letters, according to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the agency that runs Medicare.

While the cards are safer, criminals are always alert to new ways of scamming people, said Amy Nofziger, a fraud expert with AARP. Recent calls to the groups fraud help line indicate that some people have received calls asking for a fee in order to deliver a new Medicare card, or asking for personal information before a new card can be issued.

Such calls are bogus. The card is free, Ms. Nofziger said, and will be mailed automatically.

According to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, Medicare will never call you uninvited and ask you to give us personal or private information to get your new Medicare Number and card.

Communicate Now With Medicare Patients

Physician practices will play a vital role in educating Medicare patients about their new cards. To prepare patients for this transition, your practice can:

  • Use waiting room posters : Post notices in your office to alert your patients about the new cards. CMS plans to release additional waiting room signs and posters before April 2018.
  • Verify patients’ addresses: If addresses on file differ from addresses on electronic eligibility transactions, ask patients to contact the Social Security Administration to update their Medicare records.
  • Prepare appointment reminders: Starting in April 2018, include prompts in reminders for Medicare patients to bring their new cards to appointments.

These new cards havent started to go out yet, but already, many people are worried about scams that look to take advantage of Medicare participants. To provide complete and accurate information, youll find answers below to some key questions about the new Medicare cards and how theyll affect you.

    Criminals Follow The News

New Medicare Cards Are Coming And How To Avoid Scams

Medicare, the federal health insurance program for people 65 and older and people with disabilities, has been a target of criminals since it started in July 1965. With more than 62 million current Medicare recipients, it’s a target-rich environment for liars, cheats and thieves. Medicare cards were changed beginning in 2018, when an 11-digit alphanumeric account numbers called Medicare Beneficiary Identifiers , replaced the 9-digit Social Security numbers that had identified enrollees.

Scammers are on the move, developing ways to take advantage of any confusion that may be related to the transition, the Federal Communications Commission warned as the new cards were being rolled out. Some scammers asked beneficiaries to pay for a new card others threatened to cancel people’s health coverage if they didn’t share their new number. The FCC said then that stolen data could be used to file fake claims or fill prescriptions or be sold on the dark web, where crooks buy and sell things.

Grossman, the assistant attorney general, urges consumers to be skeptical about unsolicited contacts. Never believe it when someone reaches out and says they’re with the Social Security Administration or Medicare, because it is likely not true, he said. They wouldn’t call you out of the blue. Instead call a real phone number for Medicare, either its regional or national headquarters in Washington, he advised.

What Will The New Medicare Beneficiary Identifier Look Like

Get Ready! Medicare Will Mail New Cards to 60 Million People

The Medicare Beneficiary Identifier is 11 characters long and can include both numbers and capital letters. The identifiers will be randomly chosen and therefore be clearly different from Social Security numbers, so you shouldnt expect to see all or part of your Social Security number appear in the identifier on your new Medicare card.

Specifically, the first, fourth, seventh, 10th, and 11th characters will always be numbers, while the second, fifth, eighth, and ninth will always be letters. The third and sixth characters can be either letters or numbers. In order to prevent any confusion between letters and numbers, the system will never use the letters S, L, O, I, B, and Z which some can mistake for the numbers 5, 1, 0, 1, 8, and 2, respectively.
