It also has a seat belt which keeps the passenger securely in place and it is compact when folded, making it easy to lift into a car or carry up the stairs. How To Get Medicare To Cover Your Wheelchair Or Scooter

To get started, youll want to schedule an appointment with your primary care doctor or another doctor that is currently treating you. During this face-to-face appointment, youll want to discuss all of your mobility challenges. Explain why you feel you need a wheelchair or scooter.

Being unable to do normal, day-to-day activities inside your home, such as:

  • Getting out of bed
  • Dressing yourself
  • Getting to the bathroom

The above are all acceptable reasons for requesting DME. Its essential to clearly communicate with your doctor what limitations youre facing. This will ensure they prescribe you the correct type of device.

Are Power Scooters Covered By Medicare

Scooters are covered as DME if they are prescribed for use in your home by a doctor. Medicare will also help pay for a power wheelchair if it is deemed medically necessary and you meet certain conditions.

A power wheelchair is essentially an electric wheelchair and is meant for people who dont have the strength or mobility to safely use a manual wheelchair or steer a scooter. In addition to a written prescription, you also have to go through a face-to-face examination before Medicare will help pay for a power wheelchair.

Medicare will only help pay for a power wheelchair if you:

  • Significantly struggle to move around your home
  • Cant safely use a cane or walker
  • Cant safely use a wheelchair
  • Dont have the strength to operate or steer a scooter
  • Go through a face-to-face exam with your doctor
  • Can safely use the power wheelchair in your home

Medicare will cover 80 percent of the cost for a scooter or power wheelchair. You will owe 20 percent after you have paid your deductible. Your doctor and supplier must both be enrolled in Medicare. Scooters and power wheelchairs are not covered if you need them only for use outside of your home.

Some Medicare Advantage Plans Cover Home Modifications

Compact Transport Chair (Small Wheel)

Some Medicare Advantage plans may cover home modifications designed for aging in place. That can include the installation of wheelchair ramps, bathroom grab bars, traction strips for stairs and even the widening of hallways and doors.

Some Medicare Advantage plans may also cover non-emergency transportation services, such as community transportation to a doctors office. These services may include coverage of handicap vans, depending on your plan and the transportation services it offers.

Medicare Advantage plans are sold by private insurance companies and are required by law to provide all of the same benefits as Original Medicare. As mentioned above, what distinguishes these plans is that they have broader limits of their coverage and typically offer some benefits not found under Original Medicare. Coverage of prescription drugs, dental, vision and hearing aids are some of the more common extra benefits found in these plans.

Its possible that a Medicare Advantage plan may extend its benefits to provide coverage for certain modifications to a vehicle as well, including wheelchair accessibility. Coverage may be restricted to those with severe disabilities requiring chronic hospitalizations. If you are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, contact your plan directly to inquire about any coverage options.

Cost Of Lift Chairs Through Medicare

Lift chairs can be expensive, typically ranging from $400 to $2,000 depending on the supplier and any additional features. Median lift chair costs are about $700.

Theres good news, though. If you have a prescription and purchase through a Medicare-participating supplier, you should be reimbursed for 80 percent of the cost of the chairs motorized lift. This usually reduces your overall cost by about $300, meaning your out-of-pocket costs for a lift chair could potentially be as little as $100. If you purchase a chair at the median $700 price point and receive the average $300 reimbursement, the total cost will be approximately $400. If you have any additional insurance or discounts, these may help lower your final cost as well.

Remember, you must meet your Medicare Part B deductible before Medicare begins paying 80 percent for approved products and services. If you havent already reached your deductible, expect to pay $203 in 2021 before you receive your 80 percent coverage.

Lyft Partners With Some Medicare Advantage Plans

The popular ridesharing company Lyft recently announced plans to expand its collaboration with certain private insurance companies to provide non-emergency transportation to doctors offices, pharmacies, clinics and other health care facilities.

The company began partnering with private insurers to provide transportation to medical appointments for plan members who live in areas that lack public transportation.

Lyft later enhanced its efforts to include rides to pharmacies, and the most recent change will expand those services to hundreds of additional cities.

In a 2019 report released by Lyft, more than a quarter of Lyft riders said that the service helped them get to a medical appointment that they would have otherwise missed.1

And thats not the only evidence to support the success of the partnership. One Medicare Advantage provider reported a 39 percent drop in ride costs and a 40 percent decrease in wait time for its patients after partnering with Lyft.2

Lyft is not only helping patients get to their appointments. The company is also helping qualified beneficiaries arrange other transportation.

Rides with Lyft are booked using a smartphone. But because many Americans over the age of 65 do not use smartphones, Lyft has been implementing upgrades to its Concierge feature, which allows businesses to book rides for customers on their behalf.

How Does Competitive Bidding Affect Medicare’s Coverage For Durable Medical Equipment

You may live in an area that was using Medicares Competitive Bidding Program for durable medical equipment prior to 2019, or for some services in 2021. Beneficiaries in those areas needed to make sure they were using a Medicare contract supplier, but because the Competitive Bidding Program resulted in lower costs on durable medical equipment, the portion that the patient paid was also lower.
