What Dental Services Are Covered By Medicare Part B
While there’s no coverage for the regular care, treatment, removal, or replacement of teeth, Medicare Part B dental coverage does cover dental services performed by a physician that are an integral part of another covered procedure. Examples include:
- Oral exams in anticipation of a kidney transplant.
- Extractions done in preparation for radiation treatments involving the jaw.
- Reconstruction of the jaw following an accident.
- Outpatient exams required before an oral surgery.
Because none of these cases are preventative or common dental treatments, it would be beneficial for Medicare beneficiaries to invest in a stand-alone dental plan to help subsidize the cost of receiving the regular dental services that are essential to maintaining oral health. Lack of dental care can exacerbate chronic medical conditions, such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease, contribute to delayed diagnosis of serious medical conditions, and lead to preventable complications that sometimes result in costly emergency room visits.1 Limited or no dental coverage and cost concerns contribute to Medicare beneficiaries foregoing routine and other dental procedures.

How Could Medicare Dental Coverage Change In 2022
In 2021, a bill was introduced in the House to add dental coverage to Medicare Part B.
Known as the Medicare Dental, Vision, and Hearing Benefit Act, the idea has support from the White House as part of President Biden’s Build Back Better agenda. Specifically, the fiscal year 2022 budget proposal for the U.S. government indicates the intent for “improving access to dental, hearing, and vision coverage in Medicare.”
This is not the first time it has been proposed to offer dental coverage to Medicare beneficiaries, and it’s an important health care issue. About 47% of those on Medicare don’t have dental coverage.
The legislative process will determine if Medicare benefits are expanded in 2022 to include dental. However, there is political incentive because adding dental, vision and hearing is cheaper than other proposed Medicare extensions, such as adding nursing home coverage.

Does Medicare Cover Dental At All
The short answer to this is, in general, no, there is no Medicare dental coverage. Medicare does not cover any dental except in unique cases. Traditional Medicare does not cover dental care, dental check-ups, dental supplies or dental procedures like fillings, crowns, extractions, dentures and other services. How Does Original Medicare Cover Dental
The short answer is that Original Medicare doesnt cover most dental care, including cleanings and fillings. In fact, nearly two-thirds of Medicare beneficiaries dont have dental coverage, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation. But Medicare Part A will cover some dental services that are performed as part of an inpatient stay in a hospital.
For instance, Medicare would pay for reconstruction of your jaw after an accidental injury, or for tooth extractions that were required before radiation treatment involving the jaw. You would also be covered for an oral exam before a procedure like a kidney transplant or heart valve replacement, but you wouldnt be covered for any dental treatment resulting from the exam.
Part A would also cover the cost of your hospital care if you needed emergency or complex dental treatment, but the dental care itself would not be covered. Similarly, Medicare Supplement Insurance plans will not cover routine dental care.
