What Can You Do If You Have Part D Problems

I told Betsy she should ask Humana for a formulary exception. Actually, her doctor will fill out forms to ask Humana to make an exception and cover Viberzi for Betsy.

The doctor has to state that other medications have been tried by Betsy and only Viberzi has worked for her. From my experience with other clients who had Part D problems like Betsy, insurance companies will make an exception to their formulary.

From my experience with other clients, the insurance company cant say, Tough luck, but we will not pay for the only drug that works for your condition. But, Betsys doctor must do the required paperwork and jump through the necessary hoops.

Explore Generic Drug Options

VIBERZI and other branded drugs often have a generic equivalent on the market at a significantly lower price. Generics account for around 8 out of 10 prescriptions filled in the US and are identical their brand name counterparts in quality, safety, strength, dosage form, route of administration, performance characteristics and intended use. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor about safe generic alternatives to your branded prescription.

How Is Ibs Diagnosed

There is no definitive test to diagnose irritable bowel syndrome. The Mayo Clinic states that doctors generally use a combination of exams and tests to determine whether or not you have IBS or another digestive disorder including:

  • physical examination
  • diagnostic imaging studies such as colonoscopy or CT scan
  • laboratory tests such as a stool test or lactose intolerance testing

But Back To My Clients And Their Part D Problems

Betsy called me on January 10th to tell me she just found out that Viberzi will no longer be covered by her Humana-Walmart Part D plan. Viberzi treats irritable bowel syndrome and Betsy says she must have this medication or she cant leave her house.

I looked up Viberzi through the Plan Finder and, sure enough, her plan does not include it on their 2019 formulary. Other plans do cover it, but they call it a specialty drug, which means she would pay 33% of the retail cost. And heres the kicker: The retail cost for Viberzi is over $1,100.00 !

But it doesnt really matter how other plans cover Viberzi because Betsy cannot change her Part D plan at this time of year.

Besty was distraught by the prospect of not having access to Viberzi.

    • Food allergies or food intolerance to things such as wheat, dairy, citrus, cabbage, and beans.
    • Periods of increased stress.
    • Hormonal changes, especially in women during and around the menstrual cycle.

Factors that may contribute to developing IBS include intestinal infections, abnormal muscle contractions in the intestine, and nervous system abnormalities in the digestive tract.

    Paying For Your Prescription Drugs

If you prefer to remain with the same Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan or Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug plan and your request for a formulary exception was denied, you may have to pay full price for your prescription drug, instead of the usual copayment or coinsurance. Some prescription drug manufacturers offer payment assistance programs, especially for newer or expensive medications. You would need to contact the prescription drug manufacturer on your own to explore this possibility.

Do you have questions about your options if your Medicare plan doesnt cover a medication you need? If youd like assistance finding Medicare Part D coverage that may cover your prescription drugs, feel free to contact eHealth to speak with a licensed insurance agent. Were here to help.

How Much Does Viberzi Cost With Insurance

Insurance does not usually offer coverage for Viberzi. In the few instances when your insurance may offer coverage, the out-of-pocket cost of Viberzi will vary. This is due to the fact that your copay depends on your specific insurance plan and deductible. The drug coupons offered by SingleCare may be able to reduce your Viberzi price significantly, lowering the price to as low as $1,298.64. This cost may be lower than the cost with insurance.

Change Your Medicare Part D Coverage

If your request for a formulary exception is denied, you may want to switch to a different Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan or Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug plan. Of course, before you switch plans, make sure the new Medicare plan covers the medications you need by checking the plans formulary.

You can switch Medicare plans and make changes to your coverage during the Annual Election Period , which runs from October 15 to December 7 each year. During this period, you can:

    • Enroll in a Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan or Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug plan for the first time.
    • Switch from one Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan to another.
    • Disenroll from your Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan.
    • Switch from one Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug plan to another.
    • Disenroll from your Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug plan and go back to Original Medicare. You can then add on a stand-alone Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan.

If you use the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period to leave your Medicare Advantage plan and return to Original Medicare, you can also use this period to enroll in a stand-alone Medicare Prescription Drug Plan. You also can use this period to switch from one Medicare Advantage plan to another.

    Request A Formulary Exception

If you or your physician believe that the non-covered medication would be the most effective for treating your condition, the next thing you can do is to request a formulary exception. A formulary is a list of prescription drugs covered by the Medicare plan. Every Medicare Prescription Drug Plan and Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug plan has one, although the specific medications included by each plans formulary will vary. Formularies may change at any time youll be notified by your Medicare plan if necessary.

A formulary exception can be granted if your doctor and/or Medicare plan determines that the prescription drug you requested is medically necessary for your health, so you will need a written statement from your doctor or health-care provider to support your case. Once your Medicare plan has received the statement from the prescribing physician, it will make a determination whether or not to cover the non-formulary medication. For a standard formulary exception request, your plan will make its decision and notify you within 72 hours of receiving the prescribing doctors statement.

If waiting 72 hours for a decision could endanger your health, you also have the right to ask for an expedited formulary exception request. If you submit an expedited request, your Medicare plan must respond within 24 hours with its decision.
