There may be rare situations in which Xarelto is covered by Medicare Part A or Part B when administered by a health care professional in an inpatient setting. But Medicare Part A and Part B do not typically cover prescription drugs obtained at pharmacies.

Xarelto lists the full cost of a 30-day supply of the drug at $492 but claims that approximately 75% of patients pay between $0 and $47 for a 30-day supply after insurance.

What Parts Of Medicare Cover Xarelto

For Medicare to cover Xarelto, doctors must use it as approved by the FDA.

Medicare coverage depends on the plan in which a person is enrolled. For example, original Medicare does not generally cover prescription drugs. However, if a person is enrolled in Medicare Part D or in a Medicare Advantage plan that covers prescriptions, they will have coverage for Xarelto.

Here is an outline of the different parts of Medicare and how they relate to Xarelto coverage.

Does Medicare Cover Eliquis

Eliquis is a prescription medication that has a number of protective benefits for the body, especially when it comes to the health of your heart and blood vessels. This medication also has a generic version, which is known as apixaban, and it is used by many individuals across the United States. Medicare provides coverage for a wide range of different prescription drugs through its Medicare Part D benefits, allowing Medicare recipients to obtain coverage for Eliquis if they are eligible and enroll in Part D coverage.

What is Eliquis?Eliquis works as an anticoagulant for the blood. This means that it prevents clots from forming when they are not supposed to. The blood naturally contains a number of different clotting factors. These factors all play important roles in the body to prevent excess bleeding, especially when an injury occurs.

For example, if you get a cut on your arm, your body will send clotting factors to the injury site. These factors work to make blood thicker and almost gel-like. This is known as coagulation. The thicker blood can then create a blood clot, which serves as a scab and seals off the site to stop the bleeding. This also allows the site to begin the healing process so that it can restore the original tissue and functionality.

An Example Of Xarelto Costs With Medicare

Lets use an example of a Medicare Part D plan member to better illustrate how much you might pay for Xeralto with Medicare.

John has a Medicare Part D plan from a leading insurance carrier. Under his plan, drugs in tiers 1 and 2 have no annual deductible, but drugs in tiers 3, 4 and 5 come with the standard $445 annual deductible.

John is prescribed a 30-day supply of Xarelto. The manufacturer cost for a 30-day supply is $492. Because Xarelto is a tier 3 drug, John is responsible for the first $445 in order to satisfy the deductible. After making the $445 payment to meet his deductible, John then must make a $40 copayment for the remainder of the cost.

John pays a total of $485 for this 30-day prescription of Xarelto, which is only $7 less than the retail cost.

Although Johns costs are high for the initial prescription, his savings are then reflected in each of his subsequent refills. After 30 days, Johns doctor determines the Xarelto is effective and prescribes another 30-day supply. This time, John is only responsible for the $40 copayment to have the prescription filled. He is now saving more than $450 off the retail price of the drug.

After 30 more days, Johns doctor prescribes a 90-day supply which John can receive through the mail. Johns copayment for the 90-day supply is $120, meaning he has saved more than $1,300 off the retail price for this refill.

As you can see, the more you use a Medicare plan to pay for a drug like Xarelto, the more you can save.

Does Medicare Cover Xarelto

A variety of health conditions benefit from the use of blood thinners. Medications like Xarelto can reduce a persons risk of experiencing a stroke or serious cardiovascular issues. Medicare benefits that include prescription drug coverage may help pay for this medication if youve been prescribed Xarelto by your physician as part of your treatment plan.

Understanding How Xarelto Works

Xarelto, the brand name for rivaroxaban, is a common anticoagulant, or blood-thinning, medication. As an anticoagulant, Xarelto impacts certain proteins in the blood by inhibiting and disrupting their role in how clots form. Unlike some of the other anticoagulant medications on the market, Xarelto does not require dietary restrictions to improve its efficacy.

It can be prescribed as a treatment for existing blood clots or used to prevent blood clots from forming. Patients who have been diagnosed with or at risk of developing deep vein thrombosis or a pulmonary embolism are frequently treated with medications like Xarelto since these conditions can be life-threatening. It may also be prescribed during recovery from surgeries involving the knees or hips.

The medication may be prescribed in 10, 15 or 20 milligram doses and is taken in a tablet form by mouth. There are no generic forms of Xarelto available, so patients who are interested in an alternative medicine that performs similarly should ask their physician what options may be available to them.
