When Can I Apply For Medicare

How to Apply for Medicare Step by Step ð

You can apply for Medicare up to 3 months before you become eligible, the month that you become eligible, and then 3 months after you become eligible. This 7-month window is referred to as the Initial Enrollment Period . 1 The month that you become first eligible for Medicare is the month that you turn 65 if youre eligible related to a disability, the month that you become first eligible is the 25th month of your disability payments.1

If youre about to become eligible for Medicare, you may want to start shopping soon. If you miss your IEP, you may have to wait until the Annual Enrollment Period , which usually occurs from October 15 December 7 each year.2

Get Access To Additional Benefits When You Apply For Medicare

During your seven-month initial enrollment period, if you apply for Medicare online using mySocial Security or any other sign-up method:

  • No medical underwriting applies when purchasing Medigap, which means insurers must accept you, even with pre-existing medical conditions.
  • Avoids a late enrollment fee for Medicare Part A or B, which can be long-lasting and costly.
  • Avoids a late enrollment fee for Medicare Part D prescription drug insurance.

Although you can easily sign up for Medicare online, deciding which benefits to pursue for your situation is not always so easy.

Many choose to keep Original Medicare, while many others get their healthcare benefits through a Medicare Advantage plan.

As a whole, Medicare Advantage is private insurance. Each plan comes through private Medicare-approved Part C carriers.

Essentially, this is a choice between Original Medicare, a government run program, and Medicare Advantage, a group of private plans.

If selecting Original Medicare, then one should also consider Medigap insurance in addition to prescription benefits from a separate Medicare Part D policy.

What Does Medical Insurance Cover

Medical insurance consists of medical services that a person can benefit from. When an insured person buys medical insurance, they are given all the medical benefits written in the plan.

Medical insurance policies are made by experts and medical professionals who are aware of patients and any laymans medical needs in daily life. Some medical insurance plans are focused on long-term illness coverage, while some only cover accidents.

The medical insurance plans also depend on the type of plan you subscribe to and how much you pay for it. The higher premium you pay, the more benefits you will get in terms of coverage.

Medical insurance covers the cost of:

Medical checkups

Accident or sudden injury bills

Laboratory and other diagnostic tests

Surgeries, minor or major

Pediatric services

Prescription drugs

There are other medical services that can be covered as well based on the program you apply to.

When Can I Sign Up For Medicare

Can I apply for Medicare online? : Medicare Insurance

If youre aging into Medicare at 65, you can sign up for Medicare up to three months before your birthday. Coverage will begin on the first day of your birth month. If you start collecting Social Security before you turn 65, youll automatically be enrolled in both Part A and Part B of Medicare, and the monthly premium for Part B will be deducted from your Social Security check.

If youre disabled and collecting disability income, youll be automatically enrolled into both Part A and Part B on the 25th month of collecting. If youve been diagnosed with ALS or ESRD, youll be automatically enrolled as soon as you begin collecting SSDI. There is no 24-month waiting period.

Most beneficiaries opt to enroll in Part A since its premium-free. If you have another form of creditable coverage, like employer group insurance, you can opt to delay enrolling in Part B. Please note, if you do not have another form of creditable coverage and delay enrolling into Part B, you could face late-enrollment penalties in the future.

When Should You Apply For Medicare If You Have Employer Health Coverage

Most people should sign up for Medicare Part A when theyre first eligible because it rarely costs anything. But some people delay enrolling in Part B because they dont want to pay the monthly premium. The decision usually depends on the type of health coverage you already have.

You can put off enrolling in Part B at age 65 if you have group health coverage through your or your spouses job and the employer has at least 20 employees.6 Youll be able to enroll with no penalty during the Special Enrollment Period that follows the end of your employers insurance. You can also choose to enroll in Part B while still insured and pay the premium.

If your employer has fewer than 20 employees, you should apply for Part A and Part B as soon as youre eligible.7

Be sure to talk to your employers benefits administrator about how signing up for Medicare will affect your coverage or Health Savings Account .8 You cannot contribute to an HSA if you have Medicare Part A. Your administrator can help you time the beginning and end of your coverage through work and your new health insurance so theres no gap in your coverage.

When your group coverage is ending, youll need to complete documentation and submit it to your Social Security office. If you have questions, ask Social Security.
