Is It Important To Keep Your Monthly Payment Low

If you want a lower monthly premium, youll pay more in copays and coinsurance when you need care.

  • If you are pretty healthy and dont think youll need to go to the doctor very often, a plan with a lower premium and higher copays and coinsurance might make sense.
  • If you have a chronic condition or tend to go to the doctor more often, it may cost you less in the long run to pay a higher monthly premium and less in copays and coinsurance.

Keep in mind that Medicare Advantage plans cap your annual out-of-pocket costs, so youll know the most youll ever have to pay for covered services each year. With Original Medicare, there is no cap on costs.

Help with health care costs

If you are finding it difficult to pay for your health care costs, you may qualify for help paying your Medicare premiums, deductibles, and copays/coinsurance.

  • Youll need to pay for these routine services out of your own pocket if you dont have a Medicare Advantage or plan that covers them.
  • If extras like these are important to you, consider a Medicare Advantage plan, that offers the benefits you want or need.

What Is Medicare Part D And How Does It Work

UCare

Medicare Part D is a voluntary outpatient prescription drug program available to anyone who is enrolled in Medicare Part A or Part B. It helps Medicare beneficiaries pay for their prescription drugs. There are four phases of coverage:

  • Deductible – You pay your share of the cost for your drugs and UCare pays its share. Your cost is based on the prescription deductible and may include coinsurance or different copay amounts for tiers of drugs. You stay in this stage until your payments for the year, plus UCares payments, reach the initial coverage stage limit set by Medicare for the year.
  • Initial Coverage Phase – You pay a part of the cost for your drugs until you reach a limit set by Medicare for the year. Your cost will differ for brand-name vs. generic drugs and may include coinsurance or different copay amounts for tiers of drugs.
  • Coverage gap – Once you have reached the limit described in stage 2 set by Medicare, you enter the Catastrophic Coverage Stage.
  • Catastrophic coverage – UCare will pay most of the cost of your covered drugs for the rest of the calendar year. You pay the greater of a low copay or coinsurance for drugs for the remainder of the year.

Not all plans have the same deductible or copays for drug tiers. See your Summary of Benefits for specifics and for the Medicare coverage limits set each year.

Which Medicare Plan Is Right For You

Theres a lot to consider when it comes to a Medicare plan. The monthly premium is important. Thats only one aspect of coverage, though. Each Medicare Advantage plan has deductibles and out-of-pocket maximums. Your deductible is the amount you pay for covered services before the plan picks up the cost. Your out-of-pocket maximum is the most youll pay for covered services.

In general, a higher deductible means a lower premium. Medicare Advantage plans vary, so its important to look at each plan. You should also consider the number of prescriptions you take. Medicare.gov lets you input your prescription information and allows you to look for a plan that covers the prescriptions you take. Many plans have a separate prescription deductible.

Consider each plans network. If you have doctors you prefer, you may want a plan with more flexibility. If you see specialists frequently, you might want a PPO, which doesnt usually require referrals.

Make sure your plan covers your prescriptions. It should also fit into your monthly budget and your financial plan. If you dont have much in savings, a plan with a higher premium and lower deductible might be a better fit. Its more money each month but it helps keep your health care costs predictable.

How Are Ucare Medicare Plans Different From A Medicare Supplement

UCare Medicare Plans are Medicare Advantage plans that contract with the federal government to administer Medicare Part A and Part B. They cover everything that Original Medicare covers, but provide additional benefits like Part D prescription drug coverage. Because you get all your health coverage in one plan, you wont have to deal with Medicare deductibles and coinsurances. Youll be responsible only for cost-sharing with our plans. With a Medicare supplement plan, the bills you receive from your providers are first sent to Medicare, then to your plan. Medicare supplement plans cannot include Part D prescription drug coverage.
