Medicare Part B does have a monthly premium, which is $170.10 per month.â¯This monthly premium tends to go up a little bit each year. Also,â¯if you have a high income, your premium will be higher.

This means itâs important to make sure you really need Medicare Part B, because if you donât, youâre paying for insurance you arenât using.

We always recommend individuals who are working past the age of 65 to contact us to make sure their current insurance setup is appropriate.

Medicare Part B does have a deductible, but itâs much cheaper than youâre probably used to seeing â itâs only $233 per year. After you meet that deductible, you typically pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount for any services, tests, or items you need.

How Can Medicare Advantage Plans Have $0 Monthly Premiums?

The standard Medicare Part B premium for medical insurance in 2021 is $148.50.Some people who collect Social Security benefits and have their Part B premiums deducted from their payment will pay less. This is because their Part B premium increased more than the cost-of-living increase for 2021 Social Security benefits. Social Security will send a letter to all people who collect Social Security benefits that states each persons exact Part B premium amount for 2021. Since 2007, higher-income beneficiaries have paid a larger percentage of their Medicare Part B premium than most. Depending on their income, these higher-income beneficiaries will pay premiums that amount to 35, 50, 65, or 80 percent of the total cost of coverage. So How Are The Medicare Premiums You Pay For Calculated

These additional Medicare premiums are all calculated through something called IRMAA, which stands for Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount. It is an additional amount that you may have to pay along with your Medicare premium if your modified adjusted gross income is higher than a certain threshold.

Your MAGI is calculated by taking your adjusted gross income plus any of the following that apply to you: untaxed foreign income, non-taxable Social Security benefits, tax-exempt interest, and income from within the US territories that was not already included in AGI. For most people, your MAGI will be the same as your AGI but read this report by the Congressional Research Service here for further details.

In 2022, the IRMAA surcharges only apply if your MAGI is more than $91,000 for an individual or more than $182,000 for a couple. Most people have income below these levels, so the majority of enrollees will pay the standard premium, $170.10 per month.

Premiums Cover Medicare Part B

Medicare Part B covers almost all the expenses not paid by premium-free Part A. This includes outpatient care, physician services, home health services, medical supplies such as limited outpatient drugs, and medical equipment, and doctor’s services.

Medicare recipients pay a premium for Part B Medicare, but it is based on income from two years previous. For example, people who had a higher income in 2019 will pay higher Part B premiums in 2021. This is called the monthly adjustment amount.

Medicare qualifications

The formula for determining a persons qualification for Social Security and Medicare is the same. It is based on income earned and taxes paid for the duration of working life. The annual W-2 Form that U.S. employees receive includes not only year-to-date earnings but also taxes paid toward Social Security and Medicare. Forty credits are required to be eligible for benefits. The requirements may be modified for young people claiming disability or survivor benefits. Four is the maximum number of credits a person can earn per year, so it takes at least 10 years or 40 quarters of employment to be eligible for Medicare. The Social Security statement available to registered users on ssa.gov reveals if you have earned enough credits to qualify for Medicare when you reach age of 65.

Medicare Part A premium

Part A and Medicare Part B premiums are calculated differently. For Part A, most Medicare recipients are not charged any premium at all.

Seniors at age 65 are eligible for premium-free Part A if they meet the following criteria:

People under age 65 may receive Part A with no liability for premiums under the following circumstances:
