What Do You Need To Know About Your Medicare Card

How Do You Get Your Medicare Card

Your Medicare card is mailed to you once you have enrolled in Medicare. If you are automatically enrolled, you will receive the card about three months before your 65th birthday or after your 24th month of receiving disability benefits. If you are automatically enrolled and havent received your card, you can go online to request another one.

If you arent currently receiving Social Security benefits, you may have to sign up for Medicare either online, by phone or in person at a Social Security office.

Adding Your Newborn To Medicare

Enrolling your newborn in Medicare will allow them to receive free or lower cost healthcare and prescriptions. Your baby will also get free treatment in a public hospital as a public patient. Here is some information to help you enrol your newborn in Medicare.

As soon as you add your baby to your Medicare card, they will have access to subsidised or free healthcare.

If your baby is 52 weeks old or less, you can register them using a Newborn Child Declaration form. This form is provided in the Parent Pack you get from your midwife or hospital. The back page of the form will need to be filled out and signed by the midwife or doctor who attended your babys birth. Submitting this form will automatically enrol your baby in Medicare. The form has instructions on how to fill it out.

You can upload your Newborn Child Declaration form using your Medicare online account. You will be sent a Medicare card with your baby on it in 3 to 4 weeks. You can get a digital version of the card straight away in the Express Plus Medicare app.

You can also enrol your baby using your Centrelink online account when you claim any one of these payments:

• Family Tax Benefit including Newborn Upfront Payment and Newborn Supplement
• Parental Leave Pay
• Dad and Partner Pay

You should fill in the Newborn Child Declaration form from your Parent Pack and submit it through either:

• your Centrelink online account through myGov
• your Express Plus Centrelink mobile app

Replacing Your Lost Stolen Or Damaged Card

If your Medicare card is lost, stolen or damaged, you can request a new card. You can do this by:

• calling the Medicare program.

Your new card will replace your old card. Youll have the same Medicare number that you did before, but your old card will no longer be valid. Well send your new card in 3 to 4 weeks. Well send it to the address you give us.

How Do You Keep Your Card And Information Safe

If you dont want to carry the card with you when youre not going to the doctor, you should keep it in a safe place at home, such as a locked desk drawer or a fireproof safe.

Be sure to put it back in the same place every time once youre done using it. If you forget where you put it, you may need to get a replacement card.

Before 2018, Medicare cards used a subscribers Social Security number as their ID, which led to problems of identity theft. Now that your Medicare number is no longer your SSN, its less risky to lose the card. How To: Print A Copy Of Your Medicare Card Online

To print your Medicare card, you actually need to log in to a completely different online account at www.medicare.gov. Once logged in, youll see a section titled What do you want to do?. Click on Print my Medicare card.

What Does A Medicare Card Look Like

• Your Medicare card is red, white and blue
• Your Medicare card will include your name and your Medicare number, which is unique to you. New Medicare cards do not have your Social Security number

If you cant find your Medicare card or it’s damaged , there are a few ways to replace it. You can get a replacement almost instantly by logging in to your secure account on Medicare.gov to print an official copy of your card at home, at a public library or wherever you have secure access to a printer. You can log in to or create your online account on Medicare.gov.

Alternatively, you can call Medicare at 633-4227 to request that a new card be sent by mail. You can also call or visit your local Social Security office to apply for a replacement card. The downside of requesting a card through these agencies? You wont receive it for about 30 days.

If you’re at a medical facility and realize you dont have your card, ask the provider to look up your Medicare number online, which they often can. Its also a good idea to make a copy of your Medicare card and keep it on your phone or in another safe place.

Lost Stolen Or Damaged Cards

If your Medicare card is lost, stolen or damaged, it can be replaced.

Any New Brunswick resident who has a valid Medicare card may have it replaced if it is lost, stolen or damaged for the minimal fee of $10.00.

If you report your card stolen, in order to protect your privacy, the stolen card will be terminated. A new Medicare number and card will be issued upon receipt of the $10.00 fee. It is your responsibility to notify your service providers of your new number.

To arrange for a replacement card, visit your local Service New Brunswick office or send a completed Medicare Change Request, Replacement and/or Renewal, signed and dated, to New Brunswick Medicare, along with a cheque or money order, made payable to the Minister of Finance, in the amount of $10.00 for each replacement card required .

Exempt from the $10.00 replacement card fee are:

• Seniors who receive the Guaranteed Income Supplement,
• Income assistance recipients, and
