Best Medicare Supplement Plans (2022)

You may know the word deductible from other types of insurance you already have, such as auto insurance. A deductible is an amount you pay before your insurance plan begins to pay. Some Medicare Supplement plans pay the Medicare Part A hospital deductible, but make you pay the Medicare Part B medical deductible. Some plans cover neither the Part A nor the Part B deductible and you will be responsible for those costs out of pocket.

Medicare Supplement high deductible plan F* may charge a lower monthly premium than other plans. However, this low premium may be attached to a high deductible, meaning you must pay a significant amount out of pocket before your Medicare Supplement plan pays anything.

Many Medicare SNPs cover most of the qualified health care costs for beneficiaries. All SNPs must include prescription drug coverage.

Some Medicare SNPs are designed for people who are dual-eligible, meaning they are eligible for both Medicare and Medicaid. These plans are commonly called Dual-Eligible Special Needs Plans .

Medicare Advantage Special Needs Plans can also cater more specifically to the needs of people with specific medical conditions, such as:

  • Dependence issues with alcohol or other substances
  • Autoimmune disorders
  • Chronic lung disorders
  • Strokes

Some SNPs can also be available to people who live in a long-term care facility such as a nursing home.

Cost Of Medicare Supplement

For 2022, a Medicare Supplement plan costs an average of $163 per month. However, costs will depend on two factors: the policy you choose and the pricing structure in your state.

Firstly, different plan letters have different prices since each policy provides a different level of coverage. For example, Medigap Plan G, a more comprehensive plan, costs more than Plan K, a cheaper plan with less coverage. Below are the average monthly premiums of each Medigap plan for 2022. Notice that a range is given since costs can vary.

Secondly, Medigap prices will differ based on state regulations and whether the plan can set rates based on age or health status. There are three different ways in which Medigap policies can be priced:

  • Community-rated
  • Issue-age-rated
  • Attained-age-rated

The simplest rating system is community-rated, which means the same monthly premium is charged to everyone who has the same Medigap policy. This means your premium will not be based on your age but could go up because of inflation.

Issue-age-rated has a premium structure in which your monthly premium is based on the age you are when you buy the Medicare Supplement plan. In this case, premiums will be lower for people who buy at a younger age. For example, if you bought a Medigap policy at age 65, your premium could be $200, but if you bought the same plan at 80, that policy might cost $300.

The average cost of Medicare Supplement plans varies because health insurance companies have three ways that they price these plans:

  • Community-rated: Premiums are not rated based on your age.
  • Issue-age-rated: The monthly premium will be based on the age at which you purchased the policy.
  • Attained-age-rated: Premiums will increase with age.

Prices vary between insurance companies and regions. But, as a general reference, below is the average monthly premium ranges for 2021 individual Medigap plans in Florida:2

Will I Have To Wait For My Medigap Policy To Take Effect

An insurer cant make you wait for your coverage to start, but it can make you wait for coverage of a pre-existing condition and may also refuse to cover your out-of-pocket costs for that pre-existing condition for up to six months during a pre-existing conditionwaiting period. How To Choose The Best Medicare Supplement Plan

The average cost of a Medicare Supplement plan is $163 per month in 2022. However, rates can vary widely from $50 to more than $400 per month.

The best Medicare Supplement plan for you will depend on which policy provides the best benefits for your medical needs and fills in the coverage gaps where you expect to spend the most on health care.

For example, if you need skilled nursing coverage or want more protection for foreign travel emergencies, then consider how well each plan covers those categories of care. If you expect to need hospital care, a plan that pays for the Medicare Part A deductible can help protect you from a large hospital bill.

Say you need surgery in the upcoming year. For the 2022 plan year, the Medicare Part A deductible is $1,556. Some Medicare Supplement policies, such as Plan A, provide no coverage for this deductible. Therefore, you would be responsible for paying the entire $1,556 out of pocket before your Original Medicare coverage would kick in.

On the other hand, if you choose Medigap Plan G, the $1,556 deductible would be fully covered by your Supplement policy. This means you would begin having your claims covered immediately, rather than first having out-of-pocket costs for medical care. However, you should also consider the cost of the plan since Plan G can be more expensive than Plan A.

Can You Switch Yes But Theres A Catch

Its logical to consider enjoying the cost savings of a Medicare Advantage plan while youre relatively healthy, and then switching back to regular Medicare if you develop a condition you want to be treated at an out-of-town facility. In fact, switching between the two forms of Medicare is an option for everyone during the open enrollment period. This Annual Election Period runs from October 15 to December 7 each year.

Heres the catch. If you switch back to regular Medicare , you may not be able to sign up for a Medigap insurance policy. When you first sign up for Medicare Part A and Part B, Medigap insurance companies are generally obligated to sell you a policy, regardless of your medical condition. But in subsequent years they may have the right to charge you extra due to your age and preexisting conditions, or not to sell you a policy at all if you have serious medical problems.

Some states have enacted laws to address this. In New York and Connecticut, for example, Medigap insurance plans are guaranteed-issue year-round, while California, Massachusetts, Maine, Missouri, and Oregon have all set aside annual periods in which switching is allowed. If you live in a state that doesn’t have this protection, planning to switch between the systems depending on your health condition is a risky business.

Dropping Your Entire Medigap Policy

You may want a completely different Medigap policy . Or, you might decide to switch to a Medicare Advantage Plan that offers prescription drug coverage.

If you decide to drop your entire Medigap policy, you need to be careful about the timing. When you join a new Medicare drug plan, you pay a late enrollment penalty if one of these applies:

  • You drop your entire Medigap policy and the drug coverage wasn’t creditable prescription drug coverage
  • You go 63 days or more in a row before your new Medicare drug coverage begins

Supplemental health insurance provides an extra level of coverage by helping consumers meet out-of-pocket expenses and other costs not covered by their regular insurance.

Supplemental plans serve as secondary payers, filling in coverage gaps and complementing regular insurance. This mitigates, and in some cases eliminates, costs associated with copays, deductibles and other expenses depending on the extent of coverage of the supplemental insurance.

Three Tips To Save On Medicare

Additional tips for saving on Medicare coverage include:

  • See if you qualify for Extra Help. This program helps those with limited income and resources pay Medicare prescription drug program costs. These may include premiums, deductibles and coinsurance. Social Security Administration estimates that Extra Help can save about $5,000 per year on Part D prescription drug costs.
  • Enroll in a Medicare savings program. Medicare has four savings programs run by the individual states. Such programs help cut the cost of Medicare premiums and other costs. Call your state Medicaid program to find out if youre eligible.
  • See if you are eligible for Medicaid. If your income is low enough, you might qualify for this coverage. Call your state Medicaid program to see if you are eligible for the low-income program.

There are many other ways to save. For example, enrolling in a Medicare Advantage program may offer additional benefits that can save you money depending on your care needs. Shopping around and comparing these plans can get you the best deal.

Also, remember that enrolling on time for certain programs such as Medicare Parts A, B and D might help you avoid higher costs in the future in the form of late-enrollment penalties.

A Medicare Supplement Insurance plan, also called a Medigap plan, is offered by a Medicare-approved private insurance company to help bridge the gap between the charges you pay and what is covered by the federal Medicare program.

While Medicare pays for a large percentage of the health care services and supplies you may need, you are still responsible for a portion of the costs in the form of deductibles, copays, and coinsurance. A Medigap policy helps with these costs and sometimes offers more coverage for excess charges and travel health emergencies. A separate Medicare prescription drug plan will still be required. For anyone who wants to buy Medigap policies, here is a guide to how they work.
