Using Your Medicare Card
Youll need to have your Medicare card with you any time you have any medical-related visits or services. This is true even if you have Medicare Advantage, Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage or Medigap supplemental insurance.
Your regular doctor may make a copy of your card on your first visit so they will have it readily available on file. But pharmacies, testing labs, some doctors and other health care providers will require you to show it on each visit.
Be sure to let your doctor or other health care provider know if youve received a replacement or updated Medicare card. They will need the new information.

Letter As Temporary Proof Of Coverage By Mail In About 10 Days When Requested By Phone
If you need proof of Medicare coverage before your replacement card arrives, you can request a temporary coverage letter. You can use this letter at doctor appointments and for prescriptions until your new card arrives. You can call Social Security to request a temporary coverage letter. Social Security will mail the letter to you in about 10 days at your address on file with Social Security.
When Your Card Goes Missing
The first thing to do when your card is lost, for whatever reason, is to call your state Medicaid office as soon as possible. You can find a comprehensive list of state Medicaid contacts on the Medicaid.gov website. Call to speak with a representative, or visit your states Medicaid website, to report a lost or stolen card. Be prepared to give your identifying information, including your Social Security number, when you call.

Get A Replacement Or Extra Medicare Card
Select Get a replacement card.
Select a reason for Why do you need a replacement Medicare card?
Select one of these options:
- My card has been lost
- My card has been stolen
- My card has been damaged
- My card has expired
- I need a new copy of my card.
Then select Next.
If theres more than one person on your card, well ask if you want a second copy of your card. Choose Yes or No.

Medicare Advantage Enrollees Get A Separate Card
If you have Medicare Advantage, youll need your plans card to receive services. That card will be mailed to you automatically soon after you enroll. If you need to replace it, call your plan provider. Likewise, if you need a card for your prescription drug plan , contact your provider.
In any case, always keep your Medicare card and Medicare number in a safe place. Medicare fraud is a big problem, and it will be a hassle if your card or number is stolen. If you believe that someone is using your Medicare number, call 633-4227 to report it.

What If Youre New To Medicare
That depends on your enrollment status.
There are certain situations that result in automatic Medicare enrollment. Examples include those turning 65 who are already receiving Social Security retirement benefits and those under 65 who have been receiving Social Security disability insurance benefits for 24 months. These individuals will receive their Medicare cards in the mail about two to three months before the effective date.
Those who are not enrolled automatically must take action to enroll in Medicare. These Medicare cards will arrive about 15 to 30 days after enrolling.
If you are requesting a replacement, this card will also arrive within a month after the request. If you need your new Medicare card more quickly, you can request a temporary letter as proof of membership, which you should receive in about 10 days.
