Amgen Just Slashed Its Price Of The Cholesterol

You may have heard that Amgen, which manufactures the cholesterol-lowering drug evolocumab , just announced it is lowering the list price of the drug by about 60 percent to $5,850 per year from its original list price of $14,523.

The company says that the goal of the price drop is to help lower patients copays, especially for people on Medicare.

At first, it seems like great news for patients when a drug company announces a huge price decrease like this, but because of the complicated nature of our health care system, it doesnt necessarily mean that patients like you will start saving money.

Heres what you need to know about how this news may or may not affect you.

What Is Repatha?

Repatha is in a drug class known as PCSK9 inhibitors, which are injectible biologic medications that can dramatically lower LDL cholesterol levels in people with genetically high cholesterol or in those at high risk for heart attack or stroke. These drugs stop the body from making a protein called PCSK9 that is involved in cholesterol production.

Large-scale clinical trials have shown that these drugs reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, and death. They can be lifesaving in people who cant tolerate statins, the most commonly prescribed cholesterol-lowering drugs, or when statins dont work well enough to lower cholesterol.

What Happens With High Cholesterol

Cholesterol is a fatty substance found in the cells of your body. Its made in your liver. Cholesterol can also be found in foods such as eggs, cheese, and meat.

Cholesterol itself isnt a harmful substance. Your body uses cholesterol to make some vitamins, hormones, and fluids that help you digest food.

High cholesterol occurs when you have more cholesterol in your blood than your body needs. This may be caused by genetics, smoking, not getting enough physical activity, or eating too many foods that are high in cholesterol. High cholesterol can raise your risk for heart disease.

The Biotech Company Had Kept The Drug Available At The Higher List Price In Order To Give Payers And Pharmacy Benefit Managers Time To Adjust Contracts And Minimize Supply Chain Disruptions

Medicare Office Charleston Sc: Medicare Pt B

A biotech drug used to treat inherited high cholesterol that last year saw its price reduced will soon only be available at that lower price.

Thousand Oaks, California-based Amgen said Thursday that it planned to make the drug Repatha , a PCSK9 inhibitor, available at its lower price level exclusively in 2020. The drug at the original list price will be discontinued on Dec. 31.

The company reduced the price of Repatha to $5,850 per year in 2018 in order to reduce out-of-pocket costs, particularly for Medicare patients. Its competitors, Paris-based Sanofi and Tarrytown, New York-based Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, lowered the price of their own PCSK9 inhibitor, Praluent , in March, also to $5,850 per year. Both drugs are used to treat familial hypercholesterolemia.

The October 2018 introduction of the lower-priced Repatha was designed to reduce out-of-pocket costs, particularly for Medicare patients. However, it kept the drug on the market at the original price as well in order to give payers and pharmacy benefit managers enough time to modify existing contracts and minimize supply chain disruptions. Although the company said the move has improved access and affordability, some Medicare Part D plans have not yet transitioned to the new price, and as such not all Medicare patients are benefiting.
