What Are The Two Enrollment Methods
Automatic Enrollment
If youre already getting Social Security or Railroad Retirement Board benefits, you dont need to enroll in Medicare. Youll automatically get Original Medicare as of the first day of the month you turn 65.
Those who are automatically enrolled will receive a Welcome to Medicare packet, which will include your Medicare card, three months before turning 65.
If you want a Medicare Supplement Insurance policy.
If you decide you dont want Part B, you must return the Medicare card. If you keep the card, you keep Part B coverage and you will be charged the monthly premium.
Note that if you live in Puerto Rico, you will only receive Medicare Part A automatically. You need to call Social Security at 772-1213 or TTY 325-0778 to apply for Part B if you want it.
Manual Enrollment
You will not get Medicare automatically if you are not already receiving benefits from Social Security or the Railroad Retirement Board, even if youre close to age 65. You need to apply for Part A and Part B if you want them using one of the methods mentioned here, even if youre eligible for premium-free Part A.
The government expects you to know when to enroll. Be sure to apply for Part B during your Initial Enrollment Period unless you have current employment-based insurance coverage elsewhere. If you dont apply and sign up later, you will have to pay a Part B late enrollment penalty for as long as youre enrolled in Part B.

Are The New Medicare Cards Scam Proof
No, but thats because criminals outside of health care settings will try to persuade you to divulge your new, tougher-to-figure-out Medicare number.
While reports of these scams were at a height during the switch to new Medicare numbers, you should still be aware of Medicare card scams. For example, in one common scam, ID thieves call to replace the paper card with a plastic chip card similar to a credit card, and they ask for your Medicare or Social Security number.
Medicare will not call to ask for your Social Security number. Nor will it charge a fee to issue you a new card, and Medicare does not offer chip cards or plastic cards. You can print an official copy of your card or order a new one from your online Medicare account.
Keep in mind
A Medicare card isnt the only insurance card you will need. If you have original Medicare, you also will likely have at least two other medical insurance policies:
- Part D prescription drug coverage to use at your pharmacy
- Medicare supplement insurance, better known as Medigap
- Or other coverage to fill the gaps of Medicare, such as cards from your employer group plan or retiree health insurance
The alternative to original Medicare, a private Medicare Advantage plan, requires you to sign up for Medicare parts A and B first. So you would receive a Medicare card and also a separate card from your Medicare Advantage plan.

Check Status Of Medicare Application
There are various ways to receive Medicare coverage.
If you already collect Social Security benefits before age 65, youll be automatically enrolled in Medicare Part A hospital insurance and Medicare Part B medical insurance when you turn 65.
Otherwise, you need to sign up for this coverage on your own.
Once your application is submitted, you can check on its status by:
- Logging in to your My Social Security account
- Visiting your local Social Security office
- Visiting the Check Enrollment page on your MyMedicare.gov account
To check the status of your Medicare application on the Social Security website, you will need to enter your Social Security number and the confirmation number you received when you filed your application.
Your application status will show:
