How To Get A Medicare Number

Finding Medicare Number Online With These Simple Steps

There are two different ways you get a Medicare number. First, if you’ve applied for Social Security and you’re receiving Social Security benefits, you will automatically be enrolled in Medicare when you turn 65. In fact, your Medicare card will show up in the mail roughly 100 days prior to your birth month. Now if for some reason you didnt receive your Medicare card in the mail , you can still access your Medicare number by following the simple process were going to show you in just a moment.

The other way to get a Medicare number is by self-enrolling. If you are not on Social Security , you will not be automatically enrolled in Medicare. Youll have to self enroll.

You can easily do this by going to SSA.gov and completing the self-enrollment process. It should only take about 20 minutes. Once youve self-enrolled, youll receive your Medicare card within about four weeks. If you need to access your Medicare number before your card shows up in the mail, follow the process we outline below. Keep in mind, youll have to wait around 7 to 10 days after enrolling to access your Medicare number.

Using Your Medicare Number To File A Claim

Medicare beneficiaries do not typically have to file claims on their own. A health care provider has one year from the day of service to file a claim on behalf of a patient. But if your claim is not filed in a timely manner, you may contact the provider to request that they file the claim.

If they still dont file the claim soon after your request, you may file the claim yourself by gathering and completing the Patient Request for Medical Payment form along with an itemized bill from the health care provider and a letter explaining your reason for filing the claim.

In order to submit the claim, you will need to look up the appropriate Medicare Administrative Contractor . MACs are private health care insurers that have been awarded a geographic jurisdiction to process Original Medicare claims.

What Is A Health Insurance Group Number

A group number is assigned to the employer or other group that sponsors an insurance plan for its employees or other individuals covered by the group plan. Each member of the group will share the same group number, but each person will have their own unique member number.

A group number helps identify the benefits provided by the plan and is used by health care providers in the billing process.

Group numbers are generally only used for employer-sponsored plans or other group plans. Individual plans purchased directly from an insurance carrier or through the health insurance marketplace typically do not have a group number because they are not tied to any employer or group.

Nearly all insurance plans will assign members an individual member ID number, however. The member number can be found on your insurance card and may also be referred to as a policy number.

A Medicare/Medicaid Provider Number verifies that a provider has been Medicare certified and establishes the type of care the provider can perform. This identifier is a six-digit number. Could You Go To The Doctor With Your Medicare Card

Certain doctors and other health care providers who dont want to work with the Medicare program may opt out of Medicare. Medicare doesnt pay for any covered items or services you get from an opt out doctor or other provider, except in the case of an emergency or urgent need. If you still want to see an opt out provider, you and your provider can set up payment terms that you both agree to through a private contract.

A doctor or other provider who chooses to opt out must do so for 2 years, which automatically renews every 2 years unless the provider requests not to renew their opt out status.
