Does the Kardia mobile really work?

Kardia works with the FDA-cleared KardiaMobile, KardiaMobile 6L, or KardiaBand personal EKG devices, which can detect the most common arrhythmias in just 30 seconds. The Kardia app is designed to make managing heart care from home easier than ever, giving you the ability to seamlessly record EKGs, s

How Does Kardia Mobile Work

KardiaMobile is about 3 inches long, small enough to easily carry in your pocket or even attach to the back of your smart phone. On the device there is a place to put your fingers if you feel symptoms. The accessory then transmits to the Kardia App on your smart phone to give you results of your ECG, which usually takes about 30 seconds.

What Is Kardiamobile Card

KardiaMobile Card is the first and only credit-card-sized personal EKG to be cleared by the FDA. Its thin and light enough to fit perfectly in your wallet, so you can take it with you anywhere. KardiaMobile Card uses Bluetooth to connect to your phone and record a medical-grade, single-lead EKG in seconds, no WiFi required. KardiaMobile Card can detect AFib, Bradycardia, and Tachycardia, with more determinations available with a KardiaCare membership .

My Personal Favorite: The Kardiamobile 6l

In 2019, AliveCor released the KardiaMobile 6L. This is an upgraded version of the original KardiaMobile. In the 6L version you are able to take a 6-lead ECG of your heart rhythm, which is much more accurate than the single lead ECG available on the original KardiaMobile. It is a similar size to the original KardiaMobile. The advantage of 6 leads is to have a more accurate picture of your heart rhythm and a better ability to diagnose an abnormal heart rhythm. Having 6 leads means that the device can look at your heart rhythm from 6 different angles, by comparison, an ECG in your doctors office has 12 leads which would be the most accurate. As a doctor that reviews many tracings from KardiaMobile devices, I can appreciate the increased accuracy that comes from the 6-lead device compared to the original single lead device.

Check out this out of the box review of the KardiaMobile 6L. I honestly feel this is the best product available to help AFib patients manage their AFib from home.

How Do Cardiac Monitoring Devices Improve Heart Health

They aid in the diagnosis and management of arrhythmias, which just a fancy word for saying abnormal heart rhythm, Dr. David Cho, chair of the American College of Cardiologys Health Care Innovation Section, told GoodRx Health.

Electrocardiogram monitoring devices help providers identify people with a heart rhythm problem such as atrial fibrillation.

There are two main groups of cardiac monitoring devices for at-home use: medical-grade and personal at-home monitors.

  • Medical-grade devices, such as the ZioXT, are FDA approved to diagnose or monitor heart rhythm issues. They must be prescribed by a physician.

  • Personal at-home monitors, which can include smartwatches and bands, dont require a doctors prescription. Theyre not necessarily approved or cleared by the FDA, though.

Cardiac Insight Speaks Out Against Medicare Decision To Slash Reimbursement Rates And Limit Access To New Ecg Technologies

There has been an increasing trend in cardiology to use longer term remote monitoring wearable ECG tracking devices. This is an example of of the Cardiac Insight Cardea Solo adhesive patch device.

February 2, 2021 Cardiac Insight, Inc. a healthcare company specializing in wearable cardiac sensors and automated electrocardiogram analysis, said a recent Medicare reimbursement rate reduction for long-term electrocardiogram monitoring is a big set back for patient care.

The rates published by Medicare Administrative Contractor Novitas Solutions for CPT codes 93241, 93243, 93245, and 93247 showed up to a 74% reduction in physician reimbursements, Cardiac Insight said.

By setting low physician procedure reimbursement on a relatively low-cost, high yield cardiac diagnostic test, CMS and Novitas are ignoring scientific evidence and the professional judgement of thousands of physicians and heart specialists who prescribe ECG wearables because they provide the best and most convenient care for their patients, explained said Brad Harlow, CEO of Cardiac Insight.

These include the global and technical components for the newly established Category I codes for long-term ECG monitoring, effective Jan. 1, 2021. Novitas provides administrative and claims processing services for state and federal health care programs such as Medicare and Medicaid and is owned by GuideWell.

Does Medicare Cover Cardioversion

There are different types of cardioversion:

  • Electrical cardioversion This is a low voltage shock that helps to regulate your heartbeat.
  • Chemical cardioversion Chemical cardioversion is a procedure that uses medications via IV in a hospital to restore the heartbeat.
  • Catheter ablation: A doctor uses a flexible thin tube through the heart during this procedure. The catheter uses high energy to create small scars, eliminating cardiac tissue that causes the abnormal rhythm.
  • Surgical ablation: Surgical ablation, also known as a maze procedure, is performed during open-heart surgery. It involves the removal of tissue that triggers an irregular rhythm.

  • The CMS has determined that an ambulatory cardiac monitoring device or service is not covered if it does not fit into these categories. The CMS noted that it may create new ambulatory electrocardiographic monitoring device categories “if published, peer-reviewed clinical studies demonstrate evidence of improved clinical utility, or equal utility with additional advantage to the patient, as indicated by improved patient management and/or improved health outcomes in the Medicare population as compared to devices or services in the currently described categories”.

The AliveCor Heart Monitor is an iPhone-enabled heart monitor that has been known as the “iPhoneECG”. It is in a thin case with 2 electrodes that snaps onto the back of an iPhone 4 or 5. To obtain an electrocardiogram recording, the patient just holds the device while pressing fingers from each hand onto the electrodes. The device can also obtain an ECG from the patient’s chest. The AliveCor ECG iPhone application can record rhythm strips of any duration to be stored on the phone and uploaded securely for later analysis, sharing, or printing through AliveCor’s website. The AliveCor Heart Monitor will operate for about 100 hours on a 3.0 V coin cell battery.

According to the company, research studies are currently in progress to explore effectiveness of the AliveCor Heart Monitor in the following areas:

Will Private Insurance Cover The Cost Of A Cardiac Monitoring Device

    ALIVECOR KARDIA MOBILE 6L EKG

A healthcare provider needs to prescribe medical-grade cardiac monitoring devices. Major commercial health plans usually cover these FDA-cleared monitors because they are used to diagnose or treat a condition.

Private insurance also typically covers the cost of the doctors interpretation of the data. Its always best to check with your individual insurance plan about your coverage. You may have to pay a deductible, copay, or coinsurance.

Personal cardiac monitoring devices or devices not prescribed by a physician are usually not covered by insurance. This is usually because there is not enough evidence that the device is necessary for a patients care.

    How Does Kardia Compare

From Apple Watch and Fitbit, to Amazon Halo and other wearables or fitness trackers, theres a lot to consider when deciding what you truly need in a device. One thing is for sure, if youre looking for a device that provides reliable and detailed information on your heart health, look no further than Kardia. Heres why:

What Is Kardiamobile And How Can It Be Helpful For Someone With Atrial Fibrillation

KardiaMobile and KardiaMobile 6L can be purchased for at home use and they do not require a prescription. When you purchase your own device its yours to keep along with all of the data recorded. The Kardia devices work similar to external monitors given to you by your doctor, like the 24 hour Holter Monitor or the 30 day Event Monitor, but they dont have to be returned.

The biggest difference between a KardiaMobile device and a simple heart rate tracker, such as on a FitBit, is that it actually takes an ECG, a picture of your heartbeat. This is very similar to the ECG you receive from your doctors office, just a simplified version.

KardiaMobile uses the ECG to identify if someone is in atrial fibrillation. Within a few seconds, the device can then send you an automated response to let you know if your heart rhythm is normal or if youre in atrial fibrillation. The images or strips that the device records belong to you. If you choose, you can also send a copy of the images to your doctors office for further review.
