Claim #: Money Added To Your Social Security Check Each Month
In his Medicare Advantage commercials, Joe Namath says that beneficiaries can receive extra money in their Social Security check every month. While some Advantage plans include a give-back feature, it isnt standard for all Advantage plans.
Further, the availability of plans with the give-back or premium-reduction feature is dependent on your location. The amount the plan reduces your premium can be as much as the standard amount, or it could be less.
Special Message For Retired State Employees:
We are committed to helping our patients understand their health insurance options. Recently, we have received questions about how our contract negotiations with UnitedHealthcare will impact retired state employees. As we work with UnitedHealthcare on a new contract for hospital and employed physician services, retired state employees need to know:
- Non-Medicare eligible state retirees are currently covered by a Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO plan and are not impacted by our hospital’s work with UnitedHealthcare.
- Medicare-eligible state retirees covered by a UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage plan can continue to receive services at our hospital regardless of our contract status with UnitedHealthcare. The state has designed the plan with the same out-of-pocket expense for in-network and out-of-network providers. As a result, we look forward to continuing to serve you as your preferred provider.
Central Carolina Hospital is encouraging all Medicare patients with questions about their 2019 insurance coverage to call the Medicare Helpline at 855.581.8943.
The helpline will give patients the chance to discuss their existing coverage and consider their options for 2019 coverage.

Is Medicare Different In Each State
Before we begin our discussion of Medicare coverage by state, letâs consider basic eligibility for Medicare. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services reports that the following factors make you eligible for Medicare:
- Age. If you are 65 or older, you qualify.
- Disability. If you get disability income from Social Security or the Railroad Retirement Board , you’ll gain eligibility for Medicare once you’ve recieved your Social Security or RRB disbursements for 24 months. There are also special qualifying criteria for those with Lou Gehrig’s disease and end-stage renal disease which can eliminate waiting periods.
Assuming now that you are eligible, letâs address the questionâis Medicare different in each state? Since Original Medicare is a completely federal program, itâs equally available to residents in all U.S. states.
However, certain programs within Medicare vary from state to state in terms of rules, availability, and pricing. Two such Medicare plans are Medigap and Medicare Advantage. The coverage and features of these Medicare plans will vary depending on where you live.
Medigap, sometimes called Medicare Supplement, is available to Original Medicare beneficiaries. It works like an insurance policy to cover the âgapâ between what Original Medicare pays and what you owe in out-of-pocket expenses .

The Solvency Of The Medicare Hi Trust Fund
This measure involves only Part A. The trust fund is considered insolvent when available revenue plus any existing balances will not cover 100 percent of annual projected costs. According to the latest estimate by the Medicare trustees , the trust fund is expected to become insolvent in 8 years , at which time available revenue will cover around 85 percent of annual projected costs for Part A services. Since Medicare began, this solvency projection has ranged from two to 28 years, with an average of 11.3 years. This and other projections in Medicare Trustees reports are based on what its actuaries call intermediate scenario but the reports also include worst-case and best-case projections that are quite different .

Medicare Fraud Impersonates Authorities
Lets get back to the Medicare Coverage Helpline Scam. In a different variation of it, victims receive calls from a fake representative of AD Medical Advisors who tries to sell them a prescription drug discount plan or advises them of a problem with their Medicare program. The crook then asks for the bank account number and withdraws $300.
In the third variation of the Medicare Coverage Helpline Scam, criminals call seniors and claim to be government officials. They seek personal information in order to process government benefits and use the enactment of the Affordable Care Act to collect names, addresses, and bank account numbers from unsuspecting victims.
The above-mentioned scam occurs usually when theres a significant change in government policy, or when a relevant topic to this subject is featured in the news. Then its easy for scammers to use peoples uncertainty and try to get them to reveal personal information.
In this particular case, the scammer claims the government is preparing to issue national medical cards under the Affordable Care Act and asks the victims for verification of their personal information.
Last but not least, watch out for the following scams targeting seniors:

D: Prescription Drug Plans
Medicare Part D went into effect on January 1, 2006. Anyone with Part A or B is eligible for Part D, which covers mostly self-administered drugs. It was made possible by the passage of the Medicare Modernization Act of 2003. To receive this benefit, a person with Medicare must enroll in a stand-alone Prescription Drug Plan or public Part C health plan with integrated prescription drug coverage . These plans are approved and regulated by the Medicare program, but are actually designed and administered by various sponsors including charities, integrated health delivery systems, unions and health insurance companies almost all these sponsors in turn use pharmacy benefit managers in the same way as they are used by sponsors of health insurance for those not on Medicare. Unlike Original Medicare , Part D coverage is not standardized . Plans choose which drugs they wish to cover . The plans can also specify with CMS approval at what level they wish to cover it, and are encouraged to use step therapy. Some drugs are excluded from coverage altogether and Part D plans that cover excluded drugs are not allowed to pass those costs on to Medicare, and plans are required to repay CMS if they are found to have billed Medicare in these cases.

Costs And Funding Challenges
Over the long-term, Medicare faces significant financial challenges because of rising overall health care costs, increasing enrollment as the population ages, and a decreasing ratio of workers to enrollees. Total Medicare spending is projected to increase from $523 billion in 2010 to around $900 billion by 2020. From 2010 to 2030, Medicare enrollment is projected to increase dramatically, from 47 million to 79 million, and the ratio of workers to enrollees is expected to decrease from 3.7 to 2.4. However, the ratio of workers to retirees has declined steadily for decades, and social insurance systems have remained sustainable due to rising worker productivity. There is some evidence that productivity gains will continue to offset demographic trends in the near future.
The Congressional Budget Office wrote in 2008 that “future growth in spending per beneficiary for Medicare and Medicaidthe federal government’s major health care programswill be the most important determinant of long-term trends in federal spending. Changing those programs in ways that reduce the growth of costswhich will be difficult, in part because of the complexity of health policy choicesis ultimately the nation’s central long-term challenge in setting federal fiscal policy.”

The Medicare Advantage Scam And Beyond
Kay Tillow writes for Daily Kos about the Medicare Advantage scam and beyond. She explains that these for-profit health plans that deliver Medicare benefits are using stars like Joe Namath to mislead people into signing up for coverage that very well might not meet their needs if they get sick or need a lot of costly care. Medicare Advantage plans, in fact, could keep them from accessing critical care.
What Namath does not tell you is that if you choose the wrong Medicare Advantage plan, you might face inappropriate denials of care, along with other administrative and financial barriers to care. Indeed, new research finds that the wrong choice of Medicare Advantage plan might literally kill you. Thats what Yale economics professor Jason Abaluck found when analyzing data about these corporate health plans. But, the plans wont let you have access to their mortality data, and Congress is not requiring them to give you access.
Instead, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services is allowing Medicare Advantage plans to send you to the Medicare Coverage Helpline. And, while you might think that it is a government, independent agency, it is in fact a corporate marketing agency, designed to seduce you into giving up your public health insurance under traditional Medicare and to sign up for a private insurance Medicare Advantage plan.
