Nobody is truly exempt from using MBIs, but there are a few scenarios in which it might be acceptable to use an HICN in place of an MBI. Some of these exceptions include:
- Medicare appeals: When you file an appeal, you can choose whether to use an MBI or an HICN.
- Checking the status of a claim: If you filed a claim before January 1, 2020, you can use an HICN to check the status of a claim. If you filed it after that date, youll have to use the MBI.
- Span-date claims: Some providers submit single claims for services that span multiple days. These might include instances of inpatient treatment or home health. If the services rendered concluded before December 31, 2019, you may submit a claim using the HICN or the MBI.

Should I Carry My Medicare Card With Me
You should bring your Medicare card along any time youre visiting a provider to receive medical treatment or going to a pharmacy to fill a prescription or when you go to a hospital. Otherwise, its a good idea to store your Medicare card in a secure place, like a filing cabinet or safe.
Youll use your Original Medicare card to fill prescriptions only if they are covered by Medicare Part B . In all other cases, youll use your Part D prescription drug plan when filling prescriptions.
You should not share that card with anyone in a non-medical capacity. For example, your bank does not need a copy of your Medicare card. Remember, even though Medicare cards no longer list Social Security numbers, they still contain personal information, like your unique Medicare ID number, so be careful about who sees that card. If you were notified that your Medicare provider number has been exposed, you dont need to request a new provider number. A Medicare provider number uniquely identifies you and the place you work. These are already publicly available numbers that are printed on health certificates, patient referrals and invoices.
A provider number is not enough information for a criminal to access Medicare records or claiming systems. These claiming systems include security measures to prevent unauthorised access.

Will This Affect My Claims If So How
Medicare claims will be billed to CMS with the new Medicare ID from the recipient’s card once it is received. There will be a transition period where recipients can use either the HICN or the MBI to exchange data with CMS.
The transition period will begin April 1, 2018 at the latest and run through December 31, 2019. Starting January 1, 2020, Medicare claims have to be submitted using MBIs*, no matter what date the service was performed.
The MBI wont change Medicare benefits. People with Medicare may start using their new Medicare cards and MBIs as soon as they are received.
The effective date of the new cards, like the old cards, is the date each beneficiary was or is eligible for Medicare.
Once beneficiaries get their new Medicare cards with an MBI, they can use their new cards to enroll in a Medicare health or drug plan. Those Medicare beneficiaries who do choose to enroll in Medicare health and/or drug plans will still also get an insurance card from their health and/or drug plans.
Beginning in April 2018, CMS will start mailing the new Medicare cards with the MBI to all people with Medicare in phases by geographic location. The change to MBIs wont change how CMS finds non-active Medicare beneficiaries.

If youve lost your card and need to get a new Medicare card, you can call 1-800-MEDICARE , or 1-877-486-2048 for TTY users. They will walk you through getting a new card shipped to your address as soon as possible.
You can also get a replacement card directly from the MyMedicare website, by navigating to Replacement Documents and selecting the option to have a new card mailed to you.
