How Is A Medicare Beneficiary Identifier Formatted
A Medicare MBI number contains 11 characters, which are randomly generated without underlying meaning. The MBI number is a string of numbers and upper-case letters, which will include an arbitrary combination of digits and any letters in the alphabet except B, I, L, O, S, and Z. These are excluded to prevent confusion with similar-looking letters. There are no hyphens or spaces in these sequences, so if you see an example of an MBI that has them, remember that this is only for illustration purposes. If you include these characters in your claim, it could be rejected.
On a Medicare card, an MBI will appear similar to this: 1EG4-TE5-MK73. The second, fifth, eighth, and ninth characters are always letters while the first, fourth, seventh, tenth, and eleventh characters are always numbers. You can visit cms.gov for more information on the format of an MBI.

Does Private Medicare Have Group Numbers
Original Medicare is not group coverage and therefore has no corresponding group number. But private Medicare plans may have a group number associated with the plan.
Private Medicare insurance includes:
- Medicare Part C. These plans provide all the same benefits as Medicare Part A and Part B while also typically offering some additional coverage for things not found in Original Medicare like dental, vision, prescription drugs and more.
- Medicare Part D. Medicare Part D provides coverage for prescription medications, which is a benefit not covered by Original Medicare.
- Medicare Supplement Insurance. Medicare Supplement Insurance works alongside your Original Medicare coverage by picking up the cost of certain deductibles, copayments, coinsurance and other out-of-pocket costs associated with Medicare Part A and Part B.
Members of these plans may see a group number on their card that corresponds with their coverage. Instead of being grouped by company as you might in an employer-sponsored plan, beneficiaries of private Medicare plans may be grouped by area and plan type.

No You Dont Have To Give Your Doctor Your Social Security Number
While no cybercriminal worth his salt would turn down a chance to get his hands on your information, theres an even bigger prize: your Social Security number, which cybersecurity experts say is now the single most valuable piece of information in terms of being able to steal your identity.
So if our Social Security numbers are such hot property, why do doctors routinely ask for them? The answer isnt particularly endearing: Your doctors office wants your Social Security number so it can better track you down if you dont pay your bill.
Healthcare providers and others ask for your SSN because its easier for them to track unique individuals that way, said Mark Nunnikhoven, vice president of cloud research for TrendMicro, an information security company.
Given that Medicare/Medicaid covers roughly 35 percent of Americans, it may be that requesting the Social Security number from all patients is just more expedient for the doctor or hospital. But its certainly not best for patients, who may be exposing themselves to identity theft.
When asked for your SSN outside of legally required uses, push back.
