Is Optus Still A Good Mobile Provider

How & When To Sign Up for Medicare (old)

Optusâs data breach has left many current and former customers fuming. Complaints have been directed against the telcoâs inadequate notice to potential victims, lack of practical advice, and emphasis on personal responsibility vs. corporate accountability.

Ex-customers have been especially vocal about Optusâs absurd data retention since users who ditched as far back as 2017 have been implicated, too.

Current Australian metadata laws require telcos like Optus to retain customer data for up to two years after an account is closed. One insider source told the ABC, âIt annoys me that people think Optus and others want this data â it’s necessary for metadata laws â we don’t.â

âPeople pretend data is gold â it isn’t it’s uranium â super useful if used correctly and incredibly dangerous to just have laying about.â

While the responsibility lies with Optus to protect consumer data, the government must rework personal data laws to keep pace with modern times.

Meanwhile, Optus claims its systems are safe, stable, and ready for continued usage. The carrier won several 2022 Mozo Experts Choice Mobile Plan Awards, including Mobile Plan Provider of the Year 5G for its 5G mobile network.

Medigap policies are not required but enrolling in one can help you pay out-of-pocket costs, including deductibles, coinsurance and copayments.

The best time to enroll in a Medigap plan is when you are first eligible.

This is a six-month enrollment period that begins the month youâre 65 and enrolled in Medicare Part B.

If you apply for Medigap coverage after this six-month window, private insurance companies may not sell you a policy if youâre in poor health.

You can find a Medigap policy by using an online tool on the Medicare website, contacting your local SHIP or calling your State Insurance Department.

While inflation is pushing up prices for almost everything else, Medicare is about to be less expensive. Medicare Part B premiums will go down for 2023, according to an announcement Tuesday by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, or CMS.

The monthly premium for Medicare Part B will fall to $164.90 in 2023 for most beneficiaries. . Thats a decrease of $5.20 per month from the $170.10 premium in 2022.

The Medicare Part B deductible is going down, too, from $233 in 2022 to $226 in 2023.

The premium decrease applies to nearly everyone with Medicare because both Original Medicare beneficiaries and Medicare Advantage members pay the Part B premium.

Why Did Prices Drop For 2023

The lower premiums for 2023 come just one year after a major price increase. Premiums went up by $21.60 from 2021 to 2022 the largest-ever price increase for Medicare Part B premiums.

A single drug is a major factor in both the 2022 price increase and the 2023 price drop: Aduhelm, a very costly treatment for Alzheimers disease.

In a November 2021 fact sheet, CMS cited potential Medicare coverage for Aduhelm as one reason for the large Part B price increase for 2022. Even though CMS hadnt yet determined whether Medicare would cover Aduhelm, CMS said that we must plan for the possibility of coverage for this high cost Alzheimers drug which could, if covered, result in significantly higher expenditures for the Medicare program.

That possibility didnt come to pass. In April 2022, CMS announced that Medicare would cover Aduhelm only in the context of certain government-approved clinical trials. As a result, Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra announced in May that we have determined that we can put cost-savings directly back into the pockets of people enrolled in Medicare in 2023.

The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period runs from January 1 to March 31.

Medicare Part A and Part B do not include prescription drug coverage, and if you switch back to Original Medicare during the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period, you will have until March 31 to join a stand-alone Medicare prescription drug plan.

When To Sign Up For Medicare Part B

What do I need to apply for a Medicare Provider Number?

If youre retiring, the best time to enroll in Part B is during your Initial Enrollment Period. For those still working past 65, check with your health administrators whether your employer coverage is creditable.
