What Equipment Does Medicare Pay For
Medicare covers certain durable medical equipment for use in the home when it considers it to be medically necessary.
Durable medical equipment is medical equipment for use in the home which is able to withstand repeated use over a sustained period of time.
Medicare has guidelines which outline what medical conditions and situations justify the coverage of each different piece of durable medical equipment, i.e. when it is medically necessary.
In their literature Medicare gives examples of Durable Medical Equipment as walkers, commode chairs, hospital beds and wheelchairs.
Medicare will not cover equipment, for use in the home, which it considers to be a comfort item, or an item which is not primarily medical in nature. Equipment such as grab bars, shower chairs and raised toilet seats fall into this category.
Medical supplies, which are disposable, are also not covered by Medicare for use in the home. This would be items such as gloves, fabric dressings and gauze.
There are two exceptions for disposable medical supplies
- if a beneficiary is receiving the Home Health benefit, some supplies are included
- if a disposable medical supply is used in conjunction with an item of durable medical equipment which is being covered at the time by Medicare

Does Medicare Cover Shower Chairs
Medicare doesnt usually cover shower chairs. But, some Part C plans may have an over the counter benefit that covers items like shower chairs. Medicare wont cover bath chairs because they arent considered medically necessary, and therefore they dont classify this supply as Durable Medical Equipment.
So, if you have Medicare and you need a shower chair, youll most likely pay for the full costs. The cost of a shower chair can range from $15 for a simple chair up to $300 for a more progressive model.
Does Medicare Advantage Cover Bathroom Equipment
Because Medicare Advantage is offered through private insurance companies, these plans may maintain a broader definition of whats medically necessary. Some policies may cover some or all of the cost of bathroom equipment that isnt reimbursable under Original Medicare, and beneficiaries should refer to the terms of their individual plan for details.
Some Medicare Advantage plans also include over-the-counter benefits, which may cover equipment that can be purchased without a prescription and isn’t considered medically necessary. This may include items such as shower chairs, transfer benches and raised toilet seats.

Medicare May Purchase Or Rent Dme
Depending on the cost of an item, Medicare either purchases it outright or they rent it.
Generally, with all but the less important purchases, Medicare will rent equipment on a monthly basis from a DME supplier.
For the duration of the rental period as long as the DME is rented from a Medicare-enrolled participating supplier who accepts assignment, your parent will pay a monthly co-payment of 20% of the Medicare-approved rental price.
What Type Of Home Bathroom Aids Does Medicare Pay For

For example, Medicare will cover supplies that help lower the risk of falls. Supplies include commode chairs, crutches, and walkers. These supplies are Durable Medical Equipment that Medicare considers medically necessary.
Preventing Slips And Falls
One of the most common problems that amputees encounter is maintaining balance while bathing and climbing in and out of the bathtub. Most tubs dont have adequate slip-resistant finishes. To reduce the chance of a slip injury, your bathtub floor should have either a rubber mat anchored with suction cups or nonslip adhesive strips. Bath strips should be placed close to each other so that very little of the bathtub floor comes in contact with your foot.
You may want to try one of the many hand-held showerheads on the market, particularly if you shower in a seated position. Handheld units also allow getting into the tub without stepping directly into the stream of water which may reduce the chance of slipping. Some models are made of rubber to fit over the tub tap, while some require installation but allow more freedom of movement. Make sure you can reach the mounting bracket from your seat and that the hose is long enough for you to spray all parts of your body. The handle should be easy to grip, and any knobs or controls should be easy to use .
Various floor materials respond differently to being wet. Some new ceramic tiles and rubber-based linoleum have better slip-resistance. Keep the floor clear of rugs or small objects on which you could slip or trip and use cleaning products that dont leave a slippery film. If you do use a bathmat, you should make sure it is firmly affixed to the floor in the same way described above with suction cups or adhesive strips.

Alternatives To Paying For Home Modifications
Medicare provides little coverage for home modifications, but there are some alternatives to paying for these updates.
Medicaid is more likely than Medicare to help thanks to home and community-based service waivers. The point of these waivers is to help you get long-term care at home instead of living in a facility, so some home modifications could be covered under this.
In past years, more than half of Medicaids long-term care spending has gone toward home and community services. HCBS waivers vary by state.
Modifications to your home can also be covered under a Medicare Advantage plan, which is an alternative to Original Medicare provided by private insurance companies.
Medicare Advantage also provides at minimum the same level of coverage as Medicare Part A and Part B.

Are Power Scooters Covered By Medicare
Scooters are covered as DME if they are prescribed for use in your home by a doctor. Medicare will also help pay for a power wheelchair if it is deemed medically necessary and you meet certain conditions.
A power wheelchair is essentially an electric wheelchair and is meant for people who dont have the strength or mobility to safely use a manual wheelchair or steer a scooter. In addition to a written prescription, you also have to go through a face-to-face examination before Medicare will help pay for a power wheelchair.
Medicare will only help pay for a power wheelchair if you:
- Significantly struggle to move around your home
- Cant safely use a cane or walker
- Cant safely use a wheelchair
- Dont have the strength to operate or steer a scooter
- Go through a face-to-face exam with your doctor
- Can safely use the power wheelchair in your home
Medicare will cover 80 percent of the cost for a scooter or power wheelchair. You will owe 20 percent after you have paid your deductible. Your doctor and supplier must both be enrolled in Medicare. Scooters and power wheelchairs are not covered if you need them only for use outside of your home.
Pediatric Walkers And Crawlers
Aetna considers pediatric crawlers medically necessary DME for disabled children.

Aetna considers the Mulholland Walkabout medically necessary DME for children who have impaired ambulation and who lack trunk stability and balance.Aetna considers the Upsee mobility device experimental and investigational for children with cerebral palsy, and neurodevelopmental disability because its clinical value for these indications has not been established.
Note: Aetna does not cover standard strollers because they do not meet Aetnaâs contractual definition of covered DME in that they are not primarily medical in nature and they are normally of use in the absence of illness or injury.

Does Medicare Cover Ice Machines
Having to go back and forth for outpatient treatments can be very tiring for elderly parents, and very time-consuming for their caregivers. Treatments, such as cold and hot therapies, could possibly be given in the home if you have the right equipment.
Does Medicare cover ice machines ? Original Medicare covers cold therapy, and does so either as an inpatient, or an outpatient service. Medicare Part B, however, does not cover any form of ice machine, ice or cold therapy unit or cooling device for home use.

Having said that, there may be rare situations in which original Medicare does provide financial assistance. When this occurs, the support comes as reimbursement, rather than in advance of the purchase. The tub would have to be considered an absolute medical necessity. The beneficiary would need a medical diagnosis that proves his/her need. In addition, a written prescription that outlines the reasons for which a walk in tub is necessary, as well as any features specific to a brand is required. Even with all this support, there is no guarantee of original Medicares assistance. When it comes to original Medicare, it is best to think of the tub as an out-of-pocket purchase, submit ones claim, and hope for the best. However, one should be financially prepared to pay the full cost, including installation. Or look for other sources of assistance.
