Original Medicares Coverage For Routine Eye Services Is Extremely Limited But You Can Get Vision Care With Most Medicare Advantage Plans

Get Medicare with Vision Coverage from UnitedHealthcare

Though it is an important aspect of our health, not many people think of eye care when they consider their overall healthcare needs. But the eyes are often the first part of the body to deteriorate as we get older.

A condition known as presbyopia starts to develop in many adults in their early- to mid-40s that causes vision to worsen over time. In addition to this, if you are over 40 years of age and have diabetes, high blood pressure, or a family history of glaucoma, you are at a much greater risk of developing vision issues by the time you reach Medicare age.

And yet with all this, Medicares coverage for routine vision services, like yearly eye exams and prescription lenses, is extremely limited. Read on to learn when Medicare covers vision services and how to qualify.

Eye Exams For Individuals With Glaucoma And Diabetes

If youre at risk for glaucoma or diabetes, Medicare Part B can cover annual eye exams once every 12 months. For instance, if you use Medicare Part B for glaucoma eye exams, 80 percent of the exam will be covered. However, youd still be responsible for paying the remaining 20 percent of the Medicare-approved amount after youve met your Part B deductible.

The cost is approximately nine dollars per month per person. In-network coverage includes:

  • Eye exam every 12 months
  • Frames every 24 months
  • Most lenses every 12 months
  • Contact in lieu of glasses

If frames and lenses are purchased at the same time, then only once copay amount is due. Not all frames and contacts are covered therefore there is an allowance of $50 wholesale or $130 retail depending on the provider. There is no copay for non-selection lenses and contacts.

How Do I Enroll In Unitedhealthcare Medicare Vision Coverage

Why Do We Still Not Have Universal Coverage?

If you already receive Social Security retirement benefits at least four months before you turn 65, youll automatically be enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B three months before your 65th birthday.

If you arent automatically enrolled, you can manually sign up for Medicare during your Initial Enrollment Period, which starts three months before your 65th birthday and continues for six months total. Once you enroll in Medicare Part A and Part B, you can enroll in a UnitedHealthcare Medicare Plan with vision benefits.

If youre already enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B, or if youre enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan but want to switch to a UHC plan with vision coverage, there are certain times of year when you can enroll in a new Medicare Advantage plan.

Unless you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period, you typically have to wait until the fall Medicare Open Enrollment Period . This period lasts from October 15 to December 7 every year.

Medicare Part A Covers Emergency And Traumatic Vision Care

Under Part A of Medicare, you are covered for medically necessary vision care. The coverage applies to emergency room procedures and any eye conditions requiring hospitalization. Such as traumatic injury. Your Medicare Supplement vision coverage would pay according to your Medicare Supplement Benefits for Part A.

Which Medicare Plans Will Be Most Helpful If You Need Dental Implants

Medicare Advantage plans with supplemental dental coverage that includes dental implants will be most helpful. You may have to pay an additional monthly premium, and there will always be a maximum dental benefit amount allowed, along with either a copay or coinsurance. If you need dental implants, you will incur some amount of out-of-pocket expense.

Not all MA plans cover dental implants. Some MA plans specifically exclude dental implants, even if they offer other comprehensive dental benefits.

MA plans list dental implants as either a covered item or an exclusion in the Evidence of Coverage document associated with each plan. If dental implants are covered, you will be responsible for a copay or coinsurance until the max annual benefit is reached. You will then be responsible for the remaining costs of the services you receive that year.

Dental coverage is detailed in the EOC, but the terminology, codes, and lists of dental procedures can be overwhelming. It is best to talk with a dental provider who routinely works with insurance companies and understands all the terms and codes associated with prosthodontic procedures.

What Medicare Vision Coverage Is Available Under Original Medicare

Under Original Medicare, Medicare vision coverage is limited to medically necessary expenses involved in the treatment of injuries and diseases of the eyes. For example, Medicare Part B may cover eye exams to screen for glaucoma if youre at high risk for the disease, or diabetic retinopathy if you have diabetes. Part B may also cover artificial eyes when medically necessary and obtained from a Medicare-approved supplier.

Medicare generally covers medically necessary cataract surgery, as well as one pair of corrective lenses after the surgery.

In most cases, however, Original Medicare doesnt cover routine vision care services such as:

  • Annual eye examinations and screening tests for glaucoma
