How To Renew Medicare Benefits

Medicare Renewal When Might You Have To Renew Your Medicare Coverage

How does annual Medicare renewal work?

There are some exceptions where youll need to take action to continue your coverage. Some situations where your Medicare Advantage or stand-alone Medicare Part D prescription drug plan coverage wont be automatically renewed include, but arent limited to:

  • Your plan reduces its service area, and you now live outside of its coverage area.
  • Your plan doesnt renew its Medicare contract for the upcoming year.
  • Your plan leaves the Medicare program in the middle of the year.
  • Medicare terminates its contract with your plan.

If your Medicare plan doesnt renew its contract with Medicare for the coming year, your Special Election Period will run from December 8 to the last day of February of the following year. If you have Medicare Advantage and dont enroll in a new plan by the date that your current plan ends its contract with Medicare, youll be automatically returned to Original Medicare.

Keep in mind that your new coverage starts on the first day of the month after you submit your enrollment application, meaning if you apply on February 8, your new Medicare plan wouldnt begin until March 1.

Enrolling In Medicare Advantage

To join a Medicare Advantage Plan, you will need to have Original Medicare coverage and live in an area where an Advantage plan is offered.

A Medicare Advantage plan will wrap your Medicare Part A and Part B coverage into one plan. But youll still have to pay the government a premium for Part B, in addition to the premium you pay for Medicare Advantage .

You can enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan when youre first eligible for Medicare, or during the annual Medicare open enrollment period in the fall .

Why will I be automatically enrolled in a similar health plan?

Insurance companies sometimes decide to change which health plans they offer in the Marketplace. This is a normal part of their business operations. Your health insurance company may have decided not to offer your particular plan through the Marketplace in 2022.

If so, we’ll enroll you in a 2022 plan with similar pricing and coverage to your 2021 plan. Your letter from your insurance company will explain your options for coverage.

You can accept the enrollment in the similar plan or compare your options and change plans.

Note: An insurance company can’t move you to a different plan based on your health or how much care you use. It can move you only if it’s no longer offering the plan you had to anyone in your area. Learn about how insurance companies can price plans.

Do You Have To Renew Original Medicare With A Medigap Policy

You never can be forced to leave Original Medicare, and once you have selected a Medigap policy, you can keep it as long as you pay for it on time. You also can keep the plan you have if you move to some other part of the country. Newly-eligible beneficiaries can no longer enroll in Plan C or Plan F anyone who signed up beforehand can continue to keep them.

But there may be circumstances when you would like to change your Medigap policy or are forced to change. For instance:3

  • Youre losing your Medigap coverage because the company that issues it is no longer in business.
  • You would like to switch Medigap policies for better or more suitable coverage.

If you buy a Medigap policy when you first sign up for Original Medicare, the insurance company cant refuse to accept you or consider your health when it prices the plan. In the insurance business, those considerations are called underwriting. If you are forced to switch Medigap policies, youll have the right to choose another one without underwriting. But if you are just shopping for a plan you like better, you may face underwriting and could be rejected altogether. Dont cancel your first Medigap policy until you are accepted for another one and you know what the price will be.

But that changed as of 2021, under the terms of the 21st Century Cures Act. People with ESRD gained the option to enroll in Medicare Advantage as of 2021, and CMS expected more than 40,000 to do so. This can be particularly advantageous for beneficiaries with ESRD who are under age 65 and living in states that dont guarantee access to Medigap plans for people under the age of 65.
